Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra worked, in its makers’ telling, because it trusted viewers to follow a visually told story, gave its heroine room to act without being rescued, and reimagined folklore rather than simply repeating it. Director and co-writer Dominic Arun summed up that approach to Scroll: “It is possible to make an honest film in an honest way.”

What is Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra about?

The Malayalam fantasy adventure stars Kalyani Priyadarshan as Chandra, a centuries-old female vampire living in human form. Its story brings her into contact with an organ-trafficking ring, policeman Nachiyappa and her neighbor Sunny, played by Naslen. Produced by Dulquer Salmaan’s Wayfarer Films, it was conceived as the first chapter in a planned superhero series.

In a September 20, 2025 interview with Scroll, Arun and co-writer Santhy Balachandran described the creative decisions behind the film and their understanding of its reception. Their account offers an explanation of intent and response, not an independently measured study of why audiences watched or box-office performance.

Why did the filmmakers say the storytelling connected?

It lets visual cues do some of the explaining

Arun said he wanted to keep the storytelling simple without spelling out every point. Rather than assume viewers needed constant explanation, the film could use images and other visual cues to convey information. He put the principle plainly: “We tend to underestimate audiences a lot – they are really smart, smarter than all of us.” He added: “We don’t need to dumb down or spoon-feed anything to them.”

That choice matters to the film’s larger design. Chandra’s story is also part of a world being established for a series, and visual details can suggest that wider world without turning every moment into an explanation of its mythology. The approach asks viewers to notice and connect details for themselves.

Chandra’s restraint is deliberate

Arun described Chandra’s restrained demeanor as intentional. The character does not need to announce her strength or have another character take over her decisions for her to register as capable. Balachandran said that after viewers first responded to the storytelling, visuals and music, she heard women point to details such as Chandra handling her own business.

That is the writers’ account of conversations they heard, not a survey finding. Its significance is in the kind of agency they say viewers noticed: Chandra’s independence is built into how she behaves, rather than treated as a lesson the plot has to explain.

How does the film reinterpret folklore?

Balachandran described the writing as a chance to revisit familiar legendary figures and the assumptions attached to them. As she told Scroll, “There was room in the original stories to re-interpret them, and Dominic was totally on board with this.” The interview describes Chandra and other characters as recasting figures usually treated as harmful or malevolent in more benign, positive forms.

This reframing also informs the film’s treatment of gender and power. Balachandran discussed challenging the idea that a woman walking alone at night must be a threat. The point is not simply to reverse who is frightening; it is to question the assumptions that make a woman’s presence seem suspicious in the first place.

Nachiyappa makes authority part of the story

Nachiyappa’s position as a policeman gives the story another way to examine power. Balachandran said the character’s role let the writers consider how authority operates and critique authoritarianism. In that reading, folklore and policing are not separate themes: both invite questions about who gets labeled dangerous, who is allowed to exercise power, and whose version of events is accepted.

How did the film grow into a larger universe?

Arun told Scroll he began writing in 2022 and brought Balachandran into the process after a couple of drafts. He said the project expanded after producer Dulquer Salmaan encouraged the team to add characters and Easter eggs, signaling a broader universe beyond Chandra’s immediate story.

Balachandran described their collaboration as bringing together Arun’s feel for youth culture and world-building with perspectives shaped by her experience and studies in visual anthropology. That combination helps explain why the film’s world-building is not only a matter of adding future-facing clues: it is also about how characters and inherited stories are seen from different perspectives.

What is established about the film’s reception?

Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra opened in cinemas on August 28, 2025. Arun said the team knew it had made a decent film but had not anticipated the scale of the response. He described audiences responding across Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Bombay, Gulf countries and the UK.

Scroll characterized the release as an immediate blockbuster, but its interview supplies no independently sourced box-office total, ranking or audience survey. The regional list and the description of a broad response should therefore be read as Arun’s account of what the team observed, not as a quantified measure of reach or commercial success.

What did “an honest film in an honest way” mean?

Arun’s phrase captures a method more than a guarantee of universal agreement: take the material seriously, trust viewers to interpret it, and avoid explaining away every ambiguity. The interview links that method to the restrained lead, visual storytelling and willingness to let folklore be re-read. Balachandran’s account adds that the film could question gendered assumptions and authority while working within a fantasy adventure.

The makers’ explanation is not proof that any one element caused the film’s reception. It does, however, clarify the creative logic they say they pursued: a heroine who acts for herself, a world that rewards attention, and familiar stories treated as open to change.

What did the filmmakers say about a sequel?

In the September 2025 interview, Arun said he planned to begin writing the second film in a month or two, and Scroll reported that Sunny would return. Those were statements of intent at that time; the interview does not establish the project’s present production, casting or release status.
