The fairest answer is that Levi repeatedly won particular polls, while Eren remained a top-ranked character. His competence, composure and quieter signs of care offer plausible reasons for his appeal; those are interpretations of the story, not causes measured by the votes.
What the popularity polls show
Levi ranked above Eren in three of the four reported franchise polls below. In the third, Erwin Smith came first, but Levi still placed ahead of Eren. The vote totals show how respondents to each poll ranked the characters, not a universal measure of audience affection.
| Poll | Reported results |
|---|---|
| First character popularity poll; year not established in the cited result page | Levi: 3,952 votes; Eren: 2,244 votes. Attack on Titan Wiki reports that the poll was held on the official Attack on Titan website and that results appeared in Attack on Titan: INSIDE Kou and its English version, Attack on Titan Guidebook. The result page does not provide the poll date or full methodology. Source. |
| Second character popularity poll, reported in the May 2015 issue of Bessatsu Shōnen Magazine | 50,342 votes were counted. Levi placed first with 10,420; Erwin Smith was second with 6,288; Eren was third with 5,176. Figures reported by Attack on Titan Wiki. Source. |
| Third character popularity poll, reported in the January 2018 issue of Bessatsu Shōnen Magazine | 6,624 votes were counted. Erwin placed first with 2,055; Levi second with 1,316; Hange third with 677; Eren fourth with 613. Figures reported by Attack on Titan Wiki. Source. |
| Fourth character popularity poll, results published September 9, 2021 in Attack on Titan: Full Color Edition Volume 2 | Levi placed first with 3,130 votes; Erwin second with 1,150; Hange third with 1,128; Eren fourth with 1,003. Figures reported by Attack on Titan Wiki. Source. |
A separate Crunchyroll News user poll published December 3, 2020 also placed Levi first and Eren third. It reflects that outlet’s users, not a representative census of Attack on Titan fans worldwide. Crunchyroll News poll.
Why Levi may appeal to voters
The polls establish rankings, not voter motivations. Any explanation is therefore a reading of the characters and story, rather than a finding proved by the vote totals.

Competence that is easy to admire
Levi’s reputation as a formidable fighter is reinforced by action scenes in which skill and precision are immediately legible. Viewers can admire what he does without needing to agree with every choice he makes. That clear, memorable kind of competence may help explain his appeal, though the polls do not ask voters about it.
Composure with signs of care beneath it
Levi is often reserved, but the story also gives him moments that suggest concern and responsibility toward others. The contrast can make his care feel understated rather than sentimental. For some fans, that combination of control and vulnerability may be compelling; it remains an interpretation, not a measured reason for his poll results.

A different kind of character journey
Eren is central to the story, and his characterization changes substantially. That change can invite intense attachment, but it can also prompt disagreement about his decisions and what he becomes. Levi’s appeal may feel more consistent to some viewers because it is anchored in a recognizable presence and skill set. This contrast is a way to read the characters, not evidence that Eren’s arc caused his lower placements.
Eren is still popular in these results
Being outpolled by Levi does not mean Eren is unpopular. He placed second in the first reported poll, third in the 2015 and 2020 results, and fourth in the 2018 and 2021 results. Each cited franchise poll still put him among its top four, while the placements shifted across polls and venues.

What these rankings cannot tell us
- They do not show how much every reader or viewer likes either character.
- The polls were conducted at different times and in different venues; the available reports do not establish a shared method or global representativeness.
- They cannot identify why voters preferred one character. Claims about Levi’s action scenes, personality or contrast with Eren are interpretations, not poll findings.
No relevant creator statement explaining Levi’s higher popularity is established by the official franchise portal or interview index cited here. The rankings support a narrower conclusion: Levi beat Eren in several reported polls, while Eren remained a leading character. Official Attack on Titan portal · Official interview index.
