Lady Gaga said she spent three days inside the egg-shaped vessel she arrived in at the 2011 Grammy Awards because she wanted solitude and did not want conversations to disrupt her performance focus. She also described the entrance at the time as a kind of “rebirth,” linking it to her performance of “Born This Way.”
What was the egg, and when did Gaga arrive in it?
On February 13, 2011, Lady Gaga arrived at the 53rd Grammy Awards inside an egg-shaped vessel designed by Hussein Chalayan. In a 2021 British Vogue Life in Looks interview, she clarified that people called it an outfit, but she considered it a vessel. The “plastic egg” label is common shorthand; Gaga’s own description was “vessel.”

Gaga recalled that she was in it for three days. That is her account of the duration, not an independently measured record of continuous occupancy.
Why did she say she stayed inside?
In the 2021 interview, Gaga said she disliked talking to people at award shows during that period because she felt conversation could throw off her performance. She described the vessel as representing devotion to her craft and a desire to be by herself. Her explanation was about protecting her focus and remaining in her own space before performing, rather than simply making an unusual entrance.

What did Gaga mean by “rebirth” in 2011?
In a contemporary ABC News interview published February 17, 2011, Gaga gave a complementary explanation: she said she wanted a rebirth and connected the idea to the universe needing one. That framing came just days after the Grammys, while the explanation about solitude and performance focus came in her 2021 retrospective. The two accounts reflect different aspects of how she described the moment.

The Grammy entrance led into Gaga’s first televised performance of “Born This Way.” ABC News’s report from February 13, 2011 covered the arrival and performance, and reported that the vessel had an oxygen tank and a fan. Those equipment details are ABC’s contemporary reporting; they do not, on their own, establish the vessel’s full engineering or safety arrangements.

- In celebration of the 10th anniversary of Lady Gaga's iconic album Born This Way, THE TENTH ANNIVERSARY version includes Lady Gaga's original Born This Way album, along with six new versions of songs reimagined by artists representing and advocating for the LGBTQIA+ community
Taken together, the entrance and performance made the egg part of the presentation of “Born This Way”: Gaga’s 2011 language emphasized rebirth, while her later account stressed the solitude and concentration she wanted before taking the stage.
