Michael Jordan’s training depended on the basketball challenge in front of him. After baseball, he rebuilt basketball-specific conditioning with daily court workouts and pickup games while filming Space Jam. For his 2001 comeback, reporting described a separate program involving weights, court drills, sprints and stretching with trainer Tim Grover. The accounts do not establish one permanent workout or a detailed diet.
How Jordan rebuilt his basketball conditioning in 1995
After playing minor league baseball, Jordan returned to the physical demands of basketball. Looking back, he said, “I didn’t have enough time to get my body back to a basketball body.” The NBA’s 2020 retrospective on The Last Dance describes how Warner Bros. built the Jordan Dome—a basketball court and gym—on the Space Jam lot. Jordan used the facility for two-hour daily workouts and evening pickup games with NBA players. NBA.com’s account of the 1995 return
A Sports Illustrated retrospective adds the demands of the film schedule: production ran Monday through Saturday, reportedly from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., with a two-hour midday workout break. Jordan also played scrimmages after filming, sometimes until 9 or 10 p.m. Reggie Miller recalled that players called their own fouls. The account describes that particular filming summer, not Jordan’s typical schedule in every season. Sports Illustrated’s report on the Space Jam summer
What his reported 2001 comeback training involved
Jordan’s later comeback brought a different training context. In a contemporaneous 2001 report, The Washington Post said he trained six days a week with longtime trainer Tim Grover, who had worked with him since 1989. The article describes weights before basketball, followed by court drills and sprints, then an individualized stretching routine that extended to his fingers and toes. It also reports that Grover closely regulated clients’ eating habits, but does not provide Jordan’s menu or a specific nutrition plan. The Washington Post’s 2001 comeback report

Grover later said in a 2020 GQ video interview that he had worked with Jordan for 15 years. That confirms the length of their professional relationship as Grover described it; it does not turn the 2001 account into a single program Jordan followed throughout his career. Why exercise became harder after retirement
Jordan described a different challenge after retiring: maintaining motivation without a season ahead. In a 2007 GQ interview, he said he stopped working out, gained weight and later began a fitness kick. He explained, “It’s tough to get in that gym when you don’t have that same motivation.” His comments are a personal account of changing habits, not a prescribed diet or a detailed post-retirement routine. What these accounts do—and don’t—show
- The training changed with the goal. The 1995 reports center on returning to basketball conditioning; the 2001 report describes preparation for a playing comeback.
- Jordan had unusual access and time. The 1995 account describes a purpose-built court and gym, long workdays and pickup games. The 2001 report describes a six-day training week with a specialist trainer.
- There is no established all-career routine. These sources document particular periods, not one fixed workout Jordan used every year.
- A precise diet or full workout prescription is not documented. The 2001 report mentions nutrition oversight in general terms but gives no meal plan, calories, supplements, sets or repetitions.
- These schedules are historical examples, not a general fitness prescription. The accounts concern elite professional basketball and do not establish that the same training volume suits other people.
