Entertainment outlets framed Rowland’s post as a possible clapback to Mdoda’s earlier remarks about her appearance—but the coverage does not establish that Rowland intended it as a response.
Who made the remark about Kelly Rowland?
Anele Mdoda, a South African media personality, was at the center of the controversy. Linda Ikeji’s 17 September 2021 report described Mdoda as saying Rowland looked good with makeup but not without it. The report quoted the remark as: “Kelly looks amazing with make-up. Take that make-up off then it’s tickets. I have receipts.” That wording is reported by Linda Ikeji; it has not been independently verified here against Mdoda’s original post.
The dispute was already circulating before the swimsuit photos. Independent Online reported on 7 January 2020 that a parody account had revived the backlash around Mdoda’s comment and that Mdoda had deleted her original post. Independent Online’s account of the earlier dispute places the later photo story in that context.
What happened in the swimsuit-photo sequence?
According to Linda Ikeji’s report, Mdoda shared a photo wearing a yellow bathing suit while on vacation. Two days later, Rowland posted a photo in a similar yellow swimsuit against an ocean-and-sky backdrop. Rowland’s caption was reported as: “I’m so feeling me right now.”

The resemblance and timing led some observers to read Rowland’s post as a silent clapback. Hot 97 likewise described her response as seeming, rather than confirmed. Neither report establishes that Rowland identified Mdoda, said the post was aimed at her, or explained the photo’s intent.
Did Kelly Rowland confirm it was a clapback?
No confirmation appears in the cited coverage. “Clapback” is the interpretation attached to the timing and similarity of the photos, not an explanation attributed to Rowland. The reports describe the sequence, but the original posts were not independently retrieved for this account; precise posting times, verified audience reactions, and claims about a current wave of fan response therefore cannot be established from these sources.

What the story does—and does not—show
- Reported: Mdoda’s earlier comments about Rowland’s appearance, followed by a yellow-swimsuit photo from Mdoda and a similar photo from Rowland two days later.
- Attributed interpretation: Coverage and observers saw Rowland’s post as a possible response.
- Not established: Rowland’s intent, the precise location or swimsuit brand, or a measured number of fans reacting or laughing.
Read the 2021 coverage from Linda Ikeji and Hot 97 with that distinction in mind: the photo sequence was reported, while its supposed message remains an interpretation.
