What is Kathy Bates’s Matlock about?
Matty is a brilliant septuagenarian lawyer who rejoins the workforce at a prestigious firm. CBS describes her as using clever tactics while hiding an agenda; Paramount Press Express likewise foregrounds her return to work and concealed motive. What is the surprise in Matlock?
The surprise is not simply that Matty is clever in court. Her unassuming presentation and hidden agenda change how viewers read the firm, her choices, and the cases around her. CBS explicitly promoted the series’ surprise plot twist: Amy Reisenbach, then CBS Entertainment president, said the reconceived show was devised by creator Jennie Snyder Urman “with a brilliant surprise plot twist.” CBS’s announcement attributes that statement to Reisenbach.
The series works best if viewers know there is a larger mystery but not its specifics. The explanation here deliberately stops short of naming the reveal.

Is the new Matlock a reboot of the original?
It is a reimagining inspired by the classic Matlock, not a continuation in which Bates takes over the original character’s life. Bates plays Madeline “Matty” Matlock, a new lead with her own story. The original series is associated with Andy Griffith; the two shows share a title and legal-drama premise, but they are separate series.
