Why Karla Sofía Gascón Played Both Manitas and Emilia in Emilia Pérez

Gascón initially wanted only to play Emilia, but came to see both roles as parts of one character’s journey that she wanted to shape herself.

Karla Sofía Gascón did not begin by insisting on playing both roles. At Cannes in May 2024, she said she initially wanted to play Emilia alone and spent several months persuading herself she could also portray Manitas. Her eventual reason for taking on both was artistic continuity: she wanted to shape the character’s full journey herself, rather than hand one part of that identity to another actor.

How Gascón’s decision changed

Gascón told the Associated Press at Cannes that, at first, “I only wanted to play the part of Emilia.” She said it took several months to convince herself she could play Manitas too. With both roles still unassigned, she eventually concluded that she would take them both on. That account describes a shift from reluctance to creative ownership, not a longstanding demand to play both parts. Associated Press, Cannes interview

Why she wanted to carry the character’s whole story

In a later Harper’s Bazaar interview, Gascón explained why she did not want the role divided after director Jacques Audiard had considered casting a cisgender man as Manitas. She said giving that part to someone else would have felt “ugly”; watching another actor play it would have felt terrible because that performer would carry part of the character’s soul. She also felt the film would not make sense to her with someone else in the role. Harper’s Bazaar interview

Gascón also described Manitas as someone living in “deep social darkness,” who wants to become who she has always been. In her view, playing both stages gave her room to guide that character’s transformation on her own terms. Speaking to Out, she put it this way: “And I think being able to play both sides of her allowed me to do this.” Out interview

How the two performances connect

Gascón and Audiard aimed to make Manitas and Emilia distinctly different while letting traces of one appear in the other. Gascón pointed to Manitas tucking hair behind an ear as an early hint of Emilia, and to an argument with Jessi in which Manitas seems to surface in Emilia. Those details make the performances more than a simple before-and-after contrast: they give the audience small points of continuity across the character’s changing presentation. Costume and movement

The physical contrast also shaped Gascón’s work. Netflix Tudum reports that prosthetics made her feel freer in Manitas’s portrayal. As Emilia, a corset restricted her movement, a tightly held wig limited her head movement, and high heels changed how she moved. Gascón said Emilia proved the more challenging role during production. Gascón also worried that prosthetics and makeup might make a serious scene seem comic to viewers. That concern was part of the performance challenge: the physical transformation had to support the character rather than distract from the drama. Out interview

Her experience is not the character’s biography

Gascón’s personal transition and Emilia’s fictional story should not be treated as interchangeable. In the Harper’s Bazaar interview, Gascón said her own story was unlike Emilia’s. Her explanation for playing both roles is about performance and authorship; it does not make the film a definitive account of trans experience.

What else Gascón brought to the role

In an interview published by RTVE on December 2, 2024, Gascón recalled meeting Audiard after the production contacted her following her work on Rebelde. She said the musical element challenged her because she could not read sheet music and had no musical training, so she prepared with teachers for singing tests. She also described the part as a chance to use her acting freedom and channel darkness that had been following her. In Spanish, she said: “Yo nunca dejo de reinventarme a mí misma, soy una creadora” (“I never stop reinventing myself; I’m a creator”). RTVE interview, December 2, 2024
