Josh Stewart announced in January 2024 that he was done playing Will LaMontagne Jr., but he did not give a specific reason for leaving. The show later killed Will off after the production could not get Stewart back. Those are separate events: the public announcement did not explain Stewart’s personal decision, while Will’s death was the writers’ later solution for the character.
What Josh Stewart said about leaving
In a January 2024 reply on X, Stewart wrote: “No sadly, my days of playing Will LaMontagne Jr. are over. You guys have been the absolute best.” TV Insider reproduced the post, and TVLine reported the announcement. Neither report attributed a more specific explanation to Stewart, so the public statement establishes that he was leaving the role—not why. TV Insider · TVLine
TVLine reported that Stewart had appeared in nine of the first season’s ten Evolution episodes. That is an episode count for that season, not a measure of his entire time playing Will.
Did scheduling cause his departure?
Scheduling had been a consideration for Stewart’s recurring appearances, but the available comments do not establish that it was his reason for leaving. After the first season of Evolution, showrunner Erica Messer said Stewart was “always on multiple projects” and that the production used him when it could. She added: “But yeah, we have to wait and see when Josh is done with his next project.” Messer was describing the show’s approach to working around his schedule in 2023, before Stewart’s January 2024 announcement—not stating his motive for departing. Why did the show kill Will off?
The production later could not get Stewart back, according to co-star A.J. Cook. Cook said the team took time to work out what to do with Will’s story. She explained that the streaming version of the series put more emphasis on characters’ personal lives, and that JJ’s family was a significant part of her character. The writers ultimately chose to end Will’s story on screen; Cook’s account explains that creative decision, not Stewart’s private reason for leaving. TVLine
When did Will die in Criminal Minds: Evolution?
Will died in a Season 18 episode covered by TVLine on May 15, 2025. He collapsed at home, and the episode identified the cause as a rare spontaneous rupture of the inferior thyroid artery. His on-screen death came more than a year after Stewart announced he was done with the role, making it the show’s later resolution to his absence—not the explanation for his departure. TVLine
