The Hollow Man matters to Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery because Rian Johnson deliberately makes Carr’s famous locked-room mystery part of the film’s language: Benoit Blanc invokes the novel’s explanation of impossible crimes while confronting one himself. Johnson has also said the book’s puzzle, horror-tinged atmosphere, humor, and title resonated with the movie. That makes Carr a clear influence and reference point—not the source of the film’s entire plot.
The book is part of the film’s mystery, not just a background prop
In The Hollow Man, detective Gideon Fell pauses to explain how a crime can seem to have happened in a locked room. In Wake Up Dead Man, Blanc summarizes that lecture as he investigates an apparently impossible crime. The reference therefore does more than reward readers who recognize a book on screen: it gives the film a vocabulary for thinking through its central puzzle. The New Yorker describes Blanc’s explanation and the copy of Carr’s novel he brings out.
Johnson described Fell’s speech as a “meta lecture” breaking down the components of a locked-door crime. He also noted that whodunits have long had an element of self-awareness. In other words, Carr’s novel is useful to the film not only because it contains an ingenious puzzle, but because it openly discusses the rules and tricks of that kind of puzzle. Johnson explained the connection in a Town & Country interview published November 26, 2025.
What Carr’s locked-room lecture contributes
A locked-room mystery asks how a crime could occur when the apparent circumstances seem to make it impossible: a room is sealed, a door is locked from within, or no plausible assailant appears to have entered or left. Carr turns that puzzle into an explicit subject of discussion. The novel’s seventeenth chapter has Fell lay out ways a seemingly sealed room might not be as impenetrable as it looks, as described in Penguin Random House UK’s sample of the book.

That makes the reference especially apt for Blanc. Rather than treating an impossible crime as magic, he approaches it as a problem whose apparent impossibility must be tested. The book’s lecture signals to the audience that the film is engaging with the conventions of classic detective fiction while inviting viewers to examine how those conventions work.
Why Johnson says the novel fits the film’s tone
Johnson has pointed to more than the mechanics of the puzzle. He said Carr’s book combines intricate construction with “terrifying, horror dread,” humor, and a title that “rung true” for some aspects of the movie. Those are his observations about the book’s resonance with Wake Up Dead Man, rather than a claim that the two stories share the same plot or meaning.

The combination matters: a mystery can be intellectually playful and unsettling at once. Carr’s novel provides a precedent for bringing the locked-room puzzle into an atmosphere of dread, while its self-conscious lecture gives that darkness a counterpoint of wit and analysis.
Is Wake Up Dead Man an adaptation of The Hollow Man?
No direct adaptation is established by these references. Johnson described the film’s development as beginning with its killer and motive—the “story-driven part”—while the mechanics of the impossible crime came together later. That account supports describing Carr as a meaningful influence on the film’s mystery form and tone, not as the author of its full plot or solution. Johnson discussed that process with Publishers Weekly on February 12, 2026.

Which edition should readers look for?
The same 1935 John Dickson Carr novel appeared in England as The Hollow Man and in the United States as The Three Coffins. That title difference can affect a search for the book, but it does not indicate two separate novels. The Penguin Random House UK sample reflects the UK/US title distinction; Hachette UK lists the book as The Hollow Man.
If you want to read the locked-room mystery Johnson references, look for Carr’s The Hollow Man; US editions may use the title The Three Coffins. Edition and availability vary by market.
