John Cena has not published a verified before-and-after weight or muscle measurement that establishes how much his body has changed. But he has described a clear shift in how he trains: after years of preparing for in-ring performance, he now prioritizes longevity, functional strength, mobility and recovery while fitting workouts around acting work. That offers plausible context for why he may look different, without proving a specific amount or cause of body change.
What changed in Cena’s training?
In a May 2026 interview with Men’s Journal, Cena said his priorities had shifted away from preparing for physical performance and toward addressing the wear accumulated over his career. He described the change this way: “The priorities have shifted from training specific to get ready for a physical performance. Now, I can really focus on correcting all the dings and scratches that I may have had over 23 years of physical performance.” The 23 years is Cena’s description of his career span.
That is a different goal from building or maintaining a particular wrestling-ready look. The interview describes training focused on longevity and functional strength, not a documented effort to lose weight or muscle.
Workouts vary with his acting schedule
In the same interview, Cena said he might train a couple of times during a demanding movie week, while a lighter week might allow four workouts. Those are examples of a changing schedule, not a fixed weekly routine.

Mobility and recovery are more prominent
Men’s Journal reported that Cena incorporates some form of mobility work each day and values static stretching. He also said recovery takes priority when work and training compete. These details reinforce the difference in purpose: his current routine is built around staying capable and managing physical wear, rather than preparing consistently for wrestling matches.
What has Cena said about physical wear?
In 2025, Cena spoke about limits he had encountered after years of performing. In a May interview with Stephanie McMahon, transcribed by Wrestling Inc., he said: “I can’t do those lifts anymore because my body is so beat up.”

In a June 2025 interview with The Breakfast Club Power, transcribed by Wrestling Inc., Cena said, “I can barely hang on right now,” and added, “I have certainly lost a step.” He connected those comments to protecting his health and his ability to walk upright. They describe his experience as a performer; they are not a medical diagnosis or a measurement of his body composition.
How retirement fits into the comparison
Cena announced his in-ring retirement in July 2024, as reported by TIME, and completed a farewell run in 2025. Leaving regular in-ring performance behind helps explain why his training priorities and schedule might differ from those associated with his wrestling years. Retirement is context, though—not proof that he lost a specific amount of weight or muscle.

What can—and can’t—be concluded from his appearance?
A reasonable reading of Cena’s own comments is that a different training objective, a variable work schedule, accumulated physical wear and greater attention to recovery may contribute to the visual contrast people notice. That is an inference from his remarks, not a confirmed explanation based on comparable body measurements.
The reviewed sources do not establish a reliable before-and-after weight, body-fat percentage or muscle measurement. There is therefore no substantiated number of pounds or amount of muscle to attribute to a change in his appearance. Nor do the cited interviews establish a particular diet, medication or other medical explanation.

Photographs also need context. Ring gear, tailoring, posture, lighting and camera angle can affect how large someone appears; a wrestling-event image and a film or promotional appearance are not necessarily like-for-like comparisons. WrestleTalk reported that Cena changed his public presentation for his WWE ambassador role, but the available sources do not quantify how much clothing or photography changes the impression of his size.
