The short answer: in the 1980s WWF locker room, Dynamite Kid of the British Bulldogs attacked Jacques Rougeau of the Fabulous Rougeaus after Rougeau blamed the Bulldogs for tampered clothing. Weeks later Rougeau hit Dynamite with a punch that, by most accounts, cost him teeth. The sequence is widely reported, but the trigger and the weapon are told differently by the people who were involved and by the families and reporters who came after.
”
The two teams and the rivalry
Dynamite Kid (Tom Billington) and Jacques Rougeau were both active in the WWF during the 1980s. Billington was part of the British Bulldogs with Davey Boy Smith, and Rougeau was part of the Fabulous Rougeaus with his brother Raymond Rougeau. The two teams were prominent tag acts of that period, which is why their backstage conflict drew attention long after it happened.
The first confrontation: the clothing prank
WWE’s retrospective on backstage feuds, published in 2013 as “11 backstage beefs that rocked the ring,” says the feud reportedly began when Rougeau returned to find his clothing tampered with. He blamed the Bulldogs, and Dynamite denied involvement. WWE is explicit that accounts of this instigating incident conflict, so the cause should be read as the commonly repeated version rather than an established fact. The source is WWE’s retrospective.
According to WWE, Dynamite took offense at being accused and struck Rougeau while Rougeau was playing cards. Raymond Rougeau gave a 2020 interview to ProWrestling.net in which he described the same episode from his family’s side. He recalled: “When Dynamite Kid attacked my brother (Jacques Rougeau) in Miami, I said to him there has to be a comeback fight with him.” He said he offered to fight Dynamite himself because he had an injured leg, but that Jacques insisted on confronting Dynamite personally. The ProWrestling.net interview is useful for the family’s framing and for placing the first attack in Miami, but it is a brother’s account, not independent confirmation.

The revenge punch in Indiana
WWE says Rougeau retaliated weeks later at an event in Indiana. The retrospective does not give a calendar date or a specific arena for either confrontation, and no other source in this account supplies one, so the venue should be read only as “Indiana, as reported.”
The weapon is where the accounts split most sharply. WWE attributes to Jacques the version in which his fist was loaded with a roll of quarters, a trick he said his father had taught him. WWE contrasts that with Dynamite’s account in his autobiography, Pure Dynamite: The Price You Pay for Wrestling Stardom, which remembers brass knuckles. The two versions cannot both be literal descriptions of the same moment, and neither has been independently verified.

Dynamite’s recollection of the impact, as quoted by WWE from his book, is vivid: “I heard the crunch as four teeth went there and that,” and “That first shot knocked me dizzy, but I still managed to think.” Rougeau’s response, also quoted by WWE, was: “Any other guy would’ve been knocked out.”
Those quotes are attributed recollections. The “four teeth” figure is Dynamite’s own account of what he heard and felt. It is not supported by dental or medical records in the sources reviewed.

How the men were separated
WWE says other wrestlers, including Bad News Brown, separated the two men before the fight went further. The retrospective does not describe the exact sequence of how this happened.
Who said what: the competing accounts
| Detail in dispute | Jacques Rougeau’s side (as relayed by WWE) | Dynamite Kid’s side (as relayed by WWE) | Basis and limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cause of the first confrontation | Clothing was tampered with, and the Bulldogs were blamed | Denied involvement in the tampering; took offense at being accused | WWE says the details conflict; the prank’s perpetrator is not established |
| Object used in the revenge punch | A roll of quarters in the fist, a trick his father taught him | Brass knuckles | Both are participant recollections; no independent physical evidence is cited |
| Location of the first attack | Miami, per Raymond Rougeau’s 2020 interview | Not stated in the WWE retrospective | Family account; no calendar date given |
| Location of the revenge punch | An event in Indiana, weeks later, per WWE | Not stated in the WWE retrospective | No calendar date or arena given in the sources reviewed |
| Injuries | Not stated | Recalls being struck and losing teeth; the number given is “four” | Dynamite’s recollection only; no dental or medical confirmation cited |
What remains unclear
- The motive behind the revenge. Both sources describe the second punch as retaliation for the first attack. The private conversations and reasoning are not documented.
- The exact dates. No calendar date is established for either confrontation.
- The full sequence. Beyond the outline above, the two accounts do not agree on enough detail to reconstruct a minute-by-minute record.
Context: locker-room ribs and real fights
The Bulldogs and the Rougeaus worked in an era when backstage pranks, known in wrestling as “ribs,” were common, and the line between a joke and a real altercation could blur. WWE’s retrospective places this incident in that wider history. It is best understood as one of several documented backstage conflicts of the period, not as a clean example of any single cause.

Reading the book and the interview
Readers who want Dynamite’s own version can start with Pure Dynamite: The Price You Pay for Wrestling Stardom, the autobiography WWE cites for his recollection of the revenge punch. Check the current edition and publisher before buying, since the sources reviewed did not establish current availability or pricing. For Raymond Rougeau’s perspective, the ProWrestling.net interview linked above is the best starting point.
