She said that as she began forming connections with men while filming The Golden Bachelorette, she felt guilty—as though developing feelings for someone new meant betraying her late husband, John.
Why did Joan Vassos feel guilty about dating?
In an interview with PEOPLE published September 17, 2024, Vassos said she had not fully confronted her grief after John died during the COVID period. “My husband passed away during COVID and I really didn’t embrace the whole mourning thing. I was in charge of being strong. I just buckled down and ignored it,” she said, in text reproduced by syndicated coverage.
On the show, new romantic feelings brought that grief into focus. “It was in my face that I was feeling really guilty, honestly, about having feelings for somebody else. I almost felt like I was cheating on John, which is crazy because he’s passed away,” she said. The phrase described an emotional conflict, not a claim that she had been unfaithful.
Who was John Vassos, and when did he die?
Joan and John Vassos had been married for 32 years. John died of pancreatic cancer in January 2021; TV Insider gives his date of death as January 18, 2021.

Vassos recalled that John had encouraged her to find someone and not be alone. As quoted by Bustle, his words to her were: “I want you to find somebody. You are the greatest wife in the world. I don’t want you to be alone. I want you to find somebody.” Remembering his support did not instantly erase the guilt she felt as she started connecting with other men.
How did she think about loving someone new while remembering John?
Vassos said psychiatrists supporting the production offered her a two-balloon analogy: she could keep John in her life while also making room for a potential partner. As TV Insider reported, the image was of holding one balloon for John and another for a possible new love; she did not have to let go of one to hold the other. It was advice she recounted receiving in the context of the show, not a universal prescription for grieving or dating.

In a July promotional conversation with family, Vassos also put the distinction plainly: “I’m not here to replace Dad, I just want our family to be whole again,” Bustle quoted.

In a 2025 interview with SurvivorNet, Vassos described wanting John to continue to exist in her family’s stories and memories while discussing a new relationship. That later perspective adds context to the 2024 interview: making space for a relationship did not mean she intended to erase her late husband.
