She was burned out. The 2000 Gear photo shoot became a public flashpoint in her effort to move beyond Mary Camden’s wholesome image, but contemporaneous reporting does not establish that it alone got her fired. Her role instead diminished as she attended college and worked around the show’s production schedule.
Why did Jessica Biel want to leave?
In a 2006 interview, Biel gave a direct explanation for her initial desire to leave: “Initially, I just wanted to go to college. I hadn’t experienced traditional-style high school. I wanted to be around kids my own age and to stop working full time. I was burned out.” Los Angeles Confidential (2006)

That retrospective account centers on education, peer life and exhaustion from working full time. It distinguishes her own stated reasons from the public controversy that had surrounded her several years earlier.
What did the Gear photo shoot have to do with it?
In February 2000, The Washington Post reported that Biel wanted to break away from the good-girl image associated with Mary Camden and had posed for the March issue of Gear. The article said she hoped the move might get her dismissed. That report captures the controversy at the time; its characterizations of Biel should be understood as the newspaper’s framing, not as a neutral account of her motives.

The same article quoted producer Aaron Spelling praising Biel and saying she remained under contract for two more years. That statement does not support the claim that she was immediately fired because of the photo shoot. Biel later regretted posing: in a 2001 interview, she called it “such a big mistake” and “a horrible, horrible choice.” The Washington Post (2000); Deseret News (2001)
Did Jessica Biel get fired from 7th Heaven?
The available accounts do not establish that she was fired, or that the Gear shoot by itself caused her departure. In 2000, Spelling publicly said Biel was still under contract. By February 2001, Deseret News reported that she was no longer a full-time cast member, had gone to Tufts University in Massachusetts and appeared occasionally. Her school schedule overlapped with production.

The change was gradual rather than a single clean break. In April 2002, executive producer Brenda Hampton said Biel was committed to three episodes for the coming season and that she hoped Biel would do more. The Washington Post (2000); Deseret News (2001); TV Guide (2002)
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why did Mary Camden appear less often?
Biel’s move to college made regular full-time work difficult. The 2001 report linked her occasional appearances to her Tufts schedule, while Hampton’s 2002 statement described a limited episode commitment, with the possibility of additional appearances still open. The evidence supports a transition to a reduced role, not a precise date when Biel’s contract ended or a definitive account of every later appearance.
