What led Ben Stiller and Christine Taylor to separate?
Taylor’s public explanation was that the couple had begun to want different things from the next stage of their lives. In a 2023 interview on The Drew Barrymore Show, she said they had “started to grow in different directions” and reached an “impasse.” She described the separation as a private decision, not the result of a publicly identified single event.

Taylor also said the time apart gave each of them space to get to know who they were. Even while separated, she said, they remained a family unit. Neither has publicly laid out a fuller private account, so claims assigning blame or naming a specific trigger go beyond what they have said.

Did they actually file for divorce?
The documented public event was a separation, not a confirmed divorce filing. In May 2017, Stiller and Taylor announced they were separating after 17 years of marriage. Their joint statement said they made the decision “with tremendous love and respect” and that raising their children would remain their priority. The sources reporting their separation and later reunion do not establish that they filed for divorce.
The couple married in May 2000. They met while filming the pilot Heat Vision and Jack, which was never broadcast, according to Entertainment Tonight’s 2017 report.
How did Stiller and Taylor get back together?
They reconnected while spending time together with their children during the COVID-19 pandemic. Stiller told Esquire, in an interview reported by ABC News in February 2022, that he had moved back in with Taylor and the children. He called their reunion “unexpected” and “wonderful,” and said they were happy to be together again.
Taylor said they had decided to hunker down together with the children and, without other distractions, “found this way back” to each other. She described the reconciliation as something that happened “organically and naturally.”

ABC News reported Taylor’s comments in 2023, while its 2022 report quoted Stiller on their reunion.

Their account points to growing apart, time to understand themselves, and a gradual reconnection while sharing time as a family. They have not publicly described a single dramatic cause for the separation. Their 2017 statement asked for privacy, and the available public comments do not support speculation about fault or other private matters.
