Jeremy Renner said he left the Mission: Impossible films because the work required extended time away from his family while he needed to focus on being a father. He has since said he would gladly reprise William Brandt, but his comments express personal interest—not a confirmed casting or announced return.
Why did Jeremy Renner leave Mission: Impossible?
Renner’s explanation was about family and the demands of the job, not a falling-out with the franchise. In a Collider interview reported by TheWrap on May 28, 2024, he said the films required substantial time away and were based in London. He had been expected to do more with the series, but the commitment did not fit his priorities as a father at that point.
“I had to go be a dad. It just wasn’t gonna work out then,” Renner said. He also spoke warmly about the people he worked with, including Tom Cruise; ComicBook.com’s May 27, 2024 coverage reproduces his comments that he loved “those guys” and Cruise.
Which Mission: Impossible films feature Renner as William Brandt?
Renner played Brandt in Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol and Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation. He did not appear in Mission: Impossible – Fallout or Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning, as the two 2024 reports note.

Would Renner return as Brandt?
Renner said a return could be possible now that his daughter is older. “Maybe now that my daughter is older that could happen,” he said, adding, “I’d always jump into a ‘Mission: Impossible’ anytime and back into Brandt. It’s great.” Those are Renner’s own conditional remarks about his willingness to return, not confirmation that he has been offered a role or reached an agreement.

The cited reports do not establish a confirmed casting or announced appearance. Renner’s openness is distinct from a production decision.
