What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Short answer: YouTube has not simply run out of good videos. It has become a much larger, more commercial and more heavily personalized attention platform. Recommendations, advertising, creator incentives, Shorts, television integration and low-cost AI production now shape what viewers see. The result can feel less personal, less trustworthy and more repetitive—even while YouTube remains an extraordinary archive of useful material.
What viewers mean when they say YouTube is “bad”
The complaint usually combines several different problems: frequent interruptions, clickbait thumbnails, padded videos, repetitive recommendations, weak search results, synthetic narration, sponsored segments and a cluttered interface. These are related, but they are not one defect with one fix.
- Removing platform ads does not repair search ranking.
- Improving recommendations does not restore older creator incentives.
- Better moderation does not eliminate sponsorships or affiliate promotions.
- Paying for Premium does not make every video original or useful.
It is also possible for YouTube to be better infrastructure and a worse everyday viewing experience at the same time.
The short answer: YouTube optimized for a different product
YouTube now behaves less like a simple video library and more like an automated system for allocating attention. The company says more than 400 hours of video are uploaded every minute, alongside billions of monthly users and hundreds of millions of hours watched daily (YouTube Help). No human editorial team can organize that volume. Automated systems must decide what appears on Home, Up next, Search, Shorts, subscriptions and connected televisions.
That scale creates abundance, but also noise. More uploads do not prove that the average video is worse. They do mean that low-value, repetitive or commercially optimized material can occupy a larger share of an individual viewer’s exposed feed.

Why the homepage feels less personal
YouTube says recommendations use many signals, including watch history, engagement and satisfaction data, and are informed by human evaluations. The company also says the system cannot be reduced to one public formula (YouTube’s explanation of recommendations).
That design creates a basic mismatch: the system predicts what might keep you watching, not necessarily what you will consider worthwhile later. A sensational video can produce strong clicks, long viewing, comments and shares without being accurate, original or useful.
Personalization can reinforce itself
Watching one dramatic topic can lead to more of the same. Autoplay, repeated clicks and short sessions provide feedback that narrows the apparent definition of your interests. The Home page is therefore not a chronological inbox for channels you follow. It is a continuously optimized surface intended to keep a session going.
Packaging spreads faster than originality
Creators who study analytics see which titles, thumbnails, opening hooks, lengths and upload schedules perform. Successful formats are copied. The result can be a feed full of talented people making technically polished videos that nevertheless look and sound alike.
Why creators make videos that feel more commercial
The incentive loop is straightforward:
- YouTube rewards videos that attract and retain viewers.
- Creators examine performance data and repeat successful structures.
- Advertisers favor predictable, brand-safe environments.
- Creators avoid subjects and language that could trigger limited or no ad revenue.
- More channels adopt familiar packaging because experimentation carries financial risk.
YouTube says monetization systems assess advertiser-friendliness using factors such as the title, thumbnail, description, tags, the video itself and engagement signals. Automated decisions can receive human review after an appeal (YouTube Help).
Rank #2
- 4K streaming made simple:With America’s number 1 TV streaming platform,* exploring popular apps—plus tons of free movies, shows, and live TV—is as easy as it is fun. *Based on hours streamed—Hypothesis Group
- 4K picture quality: With Roku Streaming Stick Plus, watch your favorites with brilliant 4K picture and vivid HDR color.
- Compact without compromises: Our sleek design won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, and it even powers from your TV alone, plugging into the back and staying out of sight. No wall outlet, no extra cords, no clutter.
- No more juggling remotes: Power up your TV, adjust the volume, and control your Roku device with one remote. Use your voice to quickly search, play entertainment, and more.
- Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.
This can encourage strong openings, curiosity-gap titles, frequent calls to subscribe, longer episodes and cautious treatment of controversial subjects. None of those features is automatically bad: a long documentary may need its length, and a compelling thumbnail can accurately represent excellent work. The problem is that the same metrics reward both careful storytelling and manipulative retention tactics.
Why there seem to be more ads
YouTube relies on advertising and memberships. The company says ads help fund creators and keep the service free, and warns that continued ad blocking can lead to playback being blocked (YouTube Help). Ad pressure also varies by country, account, device, video, advertiser demand and ongoing experiments, so there is no universal number of ads per video.
Viewers encounter at least four kinds of commercial messages:
| Type | What it includes | Does Premium generally remove it? |
|---|---|---|
| Platform-served video ads | Pre-roll and mid-roll advertising during playback | Usually, yes |
| Display and search ads | Banners and advertising around YouTube | Usually, yes |
| Creator sponsorships | Host-read or integrated brand segments | No |
| Creator or platform promotions | Affiliate links, merchandise, memberships and some live or Primetime promotions | No |
YouTube Premium removes most platform-served ads, but its own benefits page says creator sponsorships, embedded promotions, merchandise shelves and some live-event or Primetime Channel promotions can remain (Premium benefits).
AI content is visible, but it did not create every problem
Generative tools have lowered the cost of producing synthetic narration, stock-footage slideshows, altered clips, repetitive lists and automated summaries. YouTube is improving labels for realistic altered or generated material and says rollout can vary by product and territory (YouTube’s AI-label update).

In July 2025, YouTube renamed “repetitious content” as “inauthentic content” and explicitly included mass-produced or repetitive videos. YouTube described the change as a clarification of an existing monetization rule (policy clarification).

Translation, captions, dubbing, accessibility tools, visual effects and editing can improve a genuinely reported or creative video. The sharper criticism applies when automation increases volume without adding expertise, evidence, originality or accountability. Clickbait, reposts and low-effort compilations existed long before generative AI; AI makes some of them cheaper and faster.
Shorts changed the attention economy
YouTube’s 2026 CEO letter says Shorts averages 200 billion daily views, a company-reported figure (YouTube CEO letter). Shorts compete with other vertical-video feeds and reward immediate hooks, rapid swiping and quick emotional payoffs.
That does not prove Shorts destroyed long-form video. It does mean YouTube now has a high-volume short-form surface competing for the same session, which can make deliberate discovery of a documentary, lecture or older upload harder. A 2025 academic study examined how watch duration, topic sensitivity and engagement affect Shorts visibility, but its findings should not be generalized into an audit of all YouTube recommendations (study).
Why YouTube search can feel worse
Search ranking, recommendations, subscriptions and Shorts are separate systems. A search result may be popular without being the most useful answer. Commercially optimized titles can outrank precise ones, newer videos can displace authoritative older material, and Shorts can occupy attention even when a long-form explanation would serve the query better.

Why YouTube increasingly feels like television
YouTube says it has been the leading U.S. streaming service by watch time for nearly three years, according to Nielsen, and is emphasizing television viewing, podcasts, live events and professionally produced programming (company statement). The same ecosystem now serves mobile viewers, desktop users and living-room audiences while combining creator videos, music, news, sports, Shorts, shopping and studio content.
Scale can fund excellent documentaries, education, live coverage and niche communities. It can also make the service feel like a commercial network rather than a personal collection of channels.
Is YouTube objectively worse, or is this nostalgia?
A careful answer separates three questions.
Documented product changes
- More formats, including Shorts, live streams, podcasts and television-oriented programming.
- More monetization surfaces and stronger enforcement against ad blocking.
- New rules and labels addressing mass-produced and AI-altered material.
- More device and household integration.
Claims that require measurement
Ad frequency, search quality, recommendation diversity, prevalence of AI videos, small-channel visibility and average content quality require a defined sample or independent study. Personal anecdotes cannot establish a platform-wide trend.
Changes in the viewer
Your interests, tolerance for clickbait, viewing device, subscriptions and watch history may have changed too. YouTube may have changed and you may have changed at the same time. Older YouTube was smaller and less professionally competitive, but it also had spam, misinformation, copyright abuse and poor discovery.
What viewers can realistically do
- Curate subscriptions. Unsubscribe from inactive or low-value channels and use channel pages and playlists deliberately.
- Give explicit feedback. Use “Not interested” and “Don’t recommend channel” when available. These are signals, not guaranteed resets.
- Control autoplay. Turning it off reduces the chance that one accidental click trains the next session.
- Review watch history. Remove misleading or unwanted viewing when you want a cleaner recommendation profile; reducing history can also make recommendations less useful.
- Search precisely. Use dates, versions, exact phrases and channel-specific searches.
- Use Premium for the problem it actually solves. It is most useful when interruptions, background playback or offline mobile viewing are the main complaints.
YouTube says ad blocking can violate its Terms of Service and may affect playback (YouTube Help). It also does not improve recommendations or remove creator-read sponsorships.

What YouTube Premium fixes—and what it does not
Premium generally removes platform-served ads, enables background playback and offline downloads on supported mobile experiences, and includes YouTube Music Premium. YouTube says membership fees also provide a revenue stream for creators (benefits; creator support).
It does not restore chronological subscriptions, improve search ranking, remove clickbait, prevent repetitive recommendations, eliminate AI-generated videos, remove sponsorships or correct moderation mistakes. It cannot recreate an earlier version of YouTube.
YouTube lists individual, family, two-person, student, prepaid and Premium Lite offerings, but eligibility and benefits depend on country and account (plan information). The company directs users to their Purchases and memberships page for current pricing because taxes and prices vary (pricing guidance). Check the live U.S. offer before buying.

The verdict
YouTube is better as global infrastructure: it contains an extraordinary archive, supports niche expertise and funds a large amount of legitimate creative work. Google reports substantial payments to creators, artists and media companies through its copyright systems (copyright transparency report).
It is worse as a calm, user-controlled discovery experience for many longtime viewers. The central change is not one mysterious algorithm update. It is the combined effect of scale, personalized ranking, commercial pressure, Shorts, television ambitions and cheaper content production. If ads are your main problem, Premium may help. If the problem is repetition, clickbait, search pollution or the loss of a personal feed, the remedy is curation and more deliberate searching—not simply paying to remove commercials.
