Victrola Built a Hi-Fi Speaker Specifically for Vinyl—What Soundstage Actually Does

Victrola Soundstage puts a powered speaker beneath a turntable, using a down-firing woofer and vibration-conscious layout to reduce feedback risk. Here is what is known, what remains untested, and which vinyl setups make more sense.

Victrola Soundstage is a standalone powered soundbase designed to sit directly beneath a turntable. It is not a record player or a speaker built into one. Victrola announced it on January 6, 2026, at $349.99 in the United States, with summer 2026 availability planned. The unusual design aims to make close speaker-and-turntable placement less vulnerable to acoustic feedback, while replacing the amplifier and separate speaker pair in a compact setup.

The concept is promising, but the evidence is still early. Victrola has published the design and specifications, while a CES demonstration produced encouraging initial impressions rather than a full independent review. The announced price and launch window should therefore be treated as launch information, not proof of current stock or final retail pricing.

What Victrola Soundstage is—and is not

Soundstage is a low-profile, powered soundbase that can function as an all-in-one speaker for a turntable, a wireless speaker, or a monitor stand. A record player sits on top and connects to the soundbase; the turntable remains a separate component. Because the amplifier is built in, no separate receiver or power amplifier is required.

Victrola says the platform is intended to eliminate the need for separate speakers and an amplifier in a compact vinyl system. It is not a suitcase record player, not a passive speaker, and not a substitute for a full stereo system when wide physical speaker separation or extensive future upgrades matter most.

These details come from Victrola’s announcement: Introducing Victrola Soundstage. Measure the actual shelf or console before buying; the footprint is substantial, and a turntable must fit without unsafe overhang or blocked controls.

Why a vinyl-focused speaker needs to manage feedback

A cartridge and stylus read tiny physical movements in a record groove. Bass from a nearby speaker can travel through the air, the cabinet, or the furniture supporting both products. If that energy reaches the stylus, it can be picked up again and amplified, creating a feedback loop.

Typical symptoms include a low hum, booming bass, distortion that rises with volume, howl-round, or stylus mistracking. This does not mean ordinary speakers are inherently unsuitable for records. A rigid, level surface, sensible volume, good turntable isolation, and correctly positioned speakers are often enough. Soundstage’s proposition is narrower: it is designed to make a close, compact arrangement easier to manage.

How Soundstage attempts to control vibration

Victrola describes four linked design choices:

  • Symmetric Drive Woofer: a down-firing woofer with a dual-diaphragm, vibration-canceling approach intended to produce bass while minimizing cabinet movement.
  • Rear-facing ports: low-frequency energy is directed away from the turntable’s stylus area.
  • Front-facing Balanced Mode Radiators: BMR drivers are used for the midrange and treble, with broad dispersion intended to provide room-filling sound and stereo imaging.
  • Low crossover point: more critical midrange and high-frequency information remains with the forward-facing BMRs instead of being handled by the woofer.

Those are manufacturer design descriptions, not independent measurements. “Vibration-isolated” should not be read as vibration-free or feedback-proof. The supporting furniture still needs to be rigid, level, and stable, and playback should begin at a moderate volume.

Connections and turntable compatibility

Victrola specifically names its Wave and Automatic turntables, while saying Soundstage works with a wide range of other models. Compatibility depends on more than whether the platter fits.

Use a line-level RCA output

A turntable with a built-in phono preamp set to line output can connect directly to Soundstage’s RCA input. Victrola’s Wave includes a switchable phono preamp and RCA output, making it a natural companion: Victrola Wave and Tempo announcement.

Add a phono preamp when necessary

A turntable that provides only raw phono-level output cannot normally feed a standard line input directly. It requires an external phono preamp between the turntable and Soundstage. Check the turntable’s rear-panel switch or manual before connecting anything.

Choose wireless with realistic expectations

Bluetooth can be convenient for compatible turntables and for streaming from a phone, tablet, or computer, but codec compression and latency may apply. A wired RCA connection is usually the simplest path for stable, low-latency vinyl playback. USB-C is listed, but the final manual must confirm whether it accepts USB audio from a particular computer or only serves another function.

Understand Auracast’s limits

Auracast can transmit or receive broadcast audio among compatible equipment. Potential uses include sending a record to multiple speakers, extending listening to another room, or using compatible headphones. Every receiving product must support Auracast; ordinary Bluetooth compatibility alone does not guarantee it. Wireless broadcasting may also differ from a wired connection in latency, reliability, and stereo behavior.

What early listening coverage found

At CES, TechRadar reported noticeable vibration at the front of the unit but less apparent movement at the sides and rear. The publication said the cabinet seemed to contain much of the vibration and described broad, even sound around the room, with little tonal change when listening off-center. Its report is an early demonstration, not a controlled review or laboratory test: TechRadar’s CES listening report.

The same coverage suggested that similarly priced active stereo speakers might provide finer hi-fi imaging, while Soundstage could offer deeper bass and substantially easier placement. That is an editorial impression, not proof of superiority. No independent results in the available material establish frequency response, distortion, maximum clean output, channel separation, bass extension, or feedback performance across different furniture and turntables.

Soundstage compared with other vinyl setups

Setup Main advantage Main compromise
Soundstage One compact, turntable-friendly enclosure with wired, Bluetooth and Auracast options Less physical stereo separation and fewer upgrade paths than separate speakers
Victrola Tempo pair Conventional left/right placement, claimed 80W RMS, subwoofer output and broad inputs Requires two speakers and more space; not designed as a turntable platform
Victrola V1 Soundbar System Integrated turntable/soundbar arrangement with an optional wireless subwoofer configuration More integrated and less modular if you already own a turntable
Other powered bookshelf speakers Adjustable left/right spacing and easier replacement of one component Close or poor placement can increase feedback risk; no Soundstage-specific isolation design
Amplifier plus passive speakers Greatest component choice, output and upgrade flexibility Highest complexity, space requirement and likely cost

Victrola lists Tempo at $249 per pair in its January 2026 announcement; that is a dated listed price, not a guarantee of today’s price. Tempo’s product page is here. The V1 system’s current listing and configuration are described at Victrola’s V1 Soundbar System page.

Who should consider Soundstage?

It makes the most sense for

  • Apartment, desk, office, or other space-constrained systems.
  • New vinyl listeners who want a serious step beyond built-in record-player speakers without assembling a receiver and speaker pair.
  • Owners of a compatible Victrola Wave, Automatic, or another turntable with suitable output.
  • Listeners who value a clean platform under the turntable and broad room coverage more than a precise, wide listening triangle.

Choose another approach when

  • You want maximum left/right stereo width, high-volume headroom, or extensive component upgrades.
  • You already own good powered speakers.
  • Your turntable has only phono output and you do not want to add a preamp.
  • Your turntable is unusually large or heavy, or your furniture is flimsy, resonant, or too small.
  • You require independently measured performance before spending money, or expect a subwoofer output and audiophile connectivity that Victrola has not listed for Soundstage.

Setup checks before buying

  1. Measure the available surface against Soundstage’s 16.9-by-15.1-inch footprint and leave room for cables and controls.
  2. Confirm the turntable’s weight, dimensions, and output type.
  3. If using RCA, verify that the turntable is set to line/preamp mode or budget for an external phono preamp.
  4. Place the unit on a rigid, level surface; do not treat the isolation design as permission to use an unstable shelf.
  5. Start playback at moderate volume and listen for hum, booming, howl-round, or mistracking before increasing the level.
  6. For Auracast, verify support on every transmitter and receiver rather than assuming all Bluetooth products will work.

Availability and the buying decision

As of August 16, 2026, the announcement establishes an intended U.S. price of $349.99 and a summer 2026 launch window, but the available information does not independently confirm live stock, final street pricing, or a complete consumer review. Check Victrola’s live site at victrola.com before describing Soundstage as available now.

Soundstage is best understood as a thoughtful solution to a real placement problem, not evidence that conventional speakers are bad for vinyl. Its value depends on whether one compact, vibration-conscious enclosure matters more to you than the wider stereo image, flexibility, and established measurements available from a conventional system.
