Squid Game Season 2 has seven episodes, two fewer than Season 1’s nine. Creator Hwang Dong-hyuk said he chose to end the second season after Episode 7 because it marked a major turning point in the story he was writing across Seasons 2 and 3.
How much shorter is Season 2?
The difference is in episode count: Season 1 has nine episodes, while Season 2 has seven. That makes Season 2 shorter by two episodes. The reported comparison does not establish a difference in total runtime.
Why did Hwang split the story after Episode 7?
Hwang described the boundary as a narrative decision. In an interview excerpt syndicated by Yahoo Entertainment, he said: “When I was writing the script for the two seasons, I felt like there was a big turning point or an inflection point, and that was the end of episode seven, so I thought that it would do it justice to have a separate season after that.” He added, “That’s why I had first seven episodes as Season 2 and then the rest of Season 3.” (Yahoo Entertainment, December 2, 2024)
His explanation frames Episode 7 as a break in a continuing story, not as an account of a Netflix-imposed episode limit. It also suggests Season 2’s ending functions as a transition into Season 3 rather than proof that Hwang intended the second season to stand alone.

Was the shorter season caused by a production problem?
The interview excerpt gives Hwang’s story-based reason for the split; it does not establish that a budget issue, schedule problem, audience preference, or Netflix mandate forced the shorter episode count. The distinction matters: the supported explanation is that Hwang believed the story reached an important turning point at the end of Episode 7.
Associated Press reported that Hwang wrote Seasons 2 and 3 in six months and that deciding what should happen with Gi-hun was a major challenge. That is background on the writing process, not a stated cause of the season boundary. (Associated Press, December 26, 2024)

What the episode count does—and does not—tell you
The reliable comparison is seven episodes versus nine. Episode count alone does not show whether Season 2 has less total viewing time, and Hwang’s explanation does not attribute the split to a general Netflix season format. His stated reason is specific to where he felt the connected Seasons 2 and 3 story reached an inflection point.
