He also described Cho Hyun-ju’s role as serving a representational purpose similar to Ali’s in the first season.
Hwang’s reason was representation
In interviews reported by the Associated Press and other outlets, Hwang framed Hyun-ju’s inclusion as a way to give visibility to a group he believed was neglected. He described LGBTQ people and gender minorities in Korea as less widely socially accepted, and said he wanted the series to represent communities on the margins. Those are Hwang’s characterizations of the social context, not a quantified measure of public attitudes.
Hwang compared Hyun-ju’s purpose with Ali, the Pakistani migrant worker in season one. In his view, Ali’s presence brought attention to another marginalized group; Hyun-ju would do something similar for transgender people. The comparison explains the creator’s intent, rather than suggesting the characters’ experiences or identities are interchangeable. Who is Hyun-ju, and who plays her?
Cho Hyun-ju is a transgender woman introduced in season two of Squid Game. The role is played by Park Sung-hoon, a cisgender man. The Associated Press and Gizmodo’s io9 report both discuss the character and casting context. Gizmodo’s interview report; Associated Press coverage.

Why the casting remains a separate question
Hwang said he would have preferred to cast a transgender actor. He explained that the pool of openly trans actors in Korea was very small and that the production did not find a suitable actor. This is Hwang’s account of the casting process; it does not independently establish that no trans actor could have been cast.
That explanation does not settle the criticism of a cisgender actor playing a trans woman. The intention to represent a marginalized community and the decision about who should portray its members are related, but distinct questions. The cited coverage records Hwang’s rationale and the casting circumstances; it does not establish a consensus about whether the portrayal succeeds. Associated Press; Gizmodo’s io9 report.
