Is Squid Game Season 2 good?
The critical picture is generally favorable, not unanimous acclaim. Rotten Tomatoes’ consensus says the return loses some of the first season’s element of surprise, while its challenges and moral outlook keep the new season thrilling. Reviewers differ over whether familiar elements and unresolved plotting weaken that experience.
Rotten Tomatoes’ season page showed an 83% Tomatometer from 94 critic reviews and a 63% Popcornmeter from more than 2,500 audience ratings when accessed on October 8, 2026. These are live aggregates and can change. The Tomatometer is the share of counted critic reviews classified as positive; the Popcornmeter reflects audience ratings. Neither score captures every reviewer’s reasoning.
Metacritic reported 62/100 from 36 critic reviews when its result was retrieved. That weighted score uses a different method from Rotten Tomatoes’ percentage of positive reviews, so the numbers should not be compared as though they were the same measure. Rotten Tomatoes’ separate first-reviews roundup displayed 84% in 2024; it is an earlier snapshot, not a competing current score.

Tense games and moral unease
Rotten Tomatoes’ consensus highlights the “diabolical challenges” and “knotty moral outlook.” The favorable case is that the season still creates tension through its games while pressing viewers to consider the choices people make under pressure. The first-reviews roundup collected critics who called the sequel a worthy follow-up, found it more cohesive, or thought it expanded on the first season’s themes. Those are examples of positive responses, not universal agreement.
A deliberate wait before the competition
The season does not rush straight back to the games. In The Atlantic’s review, the delay builds anticipation and invites viewers to question their own alignment with Gi-hun. That is one critic’s reading of the structure; for viewers who want the competition to begin quickly, the same choice may feel like slow pacing.

Pacing and familiarity
Some critics felt the early episodes take too long to reach the competition, and that familiar elements cannot reproduce the first season’s surprise. The result depends partly on what a viewer values: patient setup and thematic development, or quick momentum and the shock of a new premise.
An unresolved story
Season 2 has seven episodes, and Netflix describes Gi-hun as returning to the deadly games with the goal of ending them. But the season’s larger conflict remains unresolved, with the story pointing toward Season 3. The Rotten Tomatoes first-reviews roundup notes that many critics saw the season as setup for the concluding third season. That may work for viewers invested in a continuing story; those expecting a self-contained arc may find the ending incomplete.

The Atlantic reads the season as complicating the first season’s account of financial desperation: players can reproduce the system’s values themselves, raising questions about cruelty, selfishness, and whether those values can be resisted. This is the reviewer’s interpretation, rather than a confirmed statement of creator intent.

What to expect before watching
Netflix lists all seven Season 2 episodes as streaming on its Tudum season page. Gi-hun returns to the games seeking to end the competition, but Season 2 is part of a larger story that continues into the third and final season.
