Why Is RPM Lower on My 24/7 YouTube Livestream Than on Regular Videos?

A lower livestream RPM may reflect fewer monetized views, a different audience or ad mix, live ad settings, or non-ad revenue—not simply lower advertiser rates.

A lower RPM on a 24/7 YouTube livestream does not, by itself, mean advertisers are paying less. RPM combines several revenue sources and divides them by views, so it can fall when a larger share of livestream views has no ads—or when the audience, ad delivery, or revenue mix differs from your regular videos. YouTube’s reviewed guidance does not identify 24/7 duration itself as an independent cause.

What RPM measures—and what it does not

YouTube defines RPM as creator revenue after YouTube’s revenue share per 1,000 views. It can include advertising, YouTube Premium, memberships, Super Chat, and Super Stickers. Because RPM combines multiple sources and uses all views in its denominator, it is not a direct measure of what advertisers paid for each ad.

CPM is advertiser cost per 1,000 ad impressions before YouTube’s revenue share. Playback-based CPM is advertiser cost per 1,000 video playbacks in which at least one ad appeared. Estimated monetized playbacks count times a video was watched with ads; they are not the same as views or ad impressions. YouTube’s Analytics definitions explain these distinctions.

A stream can therefore have many views but relatively few monetized playbacks. Its RPM may be lower even if the price advertisers pay for ad impressions has not fallen.

Why a 24/7 livestream can have lower RPM

A smaller share of views may include ads

Not every view receives an ad. Delivery can depend on monetization settings, available ad inventory, advertiser targeting, geography, viewer Premium status, recent ad exposure, and whether the content is suitable for advertisers. If total views grow faster than estimated monetized playbacks, RPM can decline without a matching decline in advertiser rates.

Audience and ad prices may differ

Advertiser competition and rates vary by geography, and advertisers can target audiences, devices, demographics, and interests. If a livestream attracts viewers from different places or audience groups than your regular videos, CPM and playback-based CPM may differ. Season and the mix of available ad formats can also affect those measures.

Live ad settings affect delivery

When live monetization is enabled, YouTube turns on pre-roll and display ads, but it does not guarantee that an ad slot will serve. Mid-roll behavior depends on the selected mode. In manual mode, no mid-rolls run unless you insert them. Check your stream’s automatic, scheduled, or manual mid-roll setup rather than assuming a long broadcast will place ads on its own. YouTube’s live monetization guidance states, “Ad slots are not guaranteed to serve ads.”

Live and replay revenue may be mixed in the comparison

A livestream’s live performance and its later replay are not necessarily the same. YouTube Analytics can break down live and replay ad revenue using the Live filter. Compare the live portion with live revenue on a like-for-like basis, not with regular-video totals that include a different viewing period or replay behavior.

RPM includes more than ads

Memberships, Premium revenue, Super Chat, and Super Stickers can change total RPM. If these sources contribute differently on the livestream and regular videos, the overall RPM difference may not reflect an advertising change. Inspect revenue sources before drawing that conclusion.

How to diagnose the difference in YouTube Analytics

  1. Match the dates and metric. Compare equivalent date ranges and the same RPM measure. Use the Live filter to distinguish livestream revenue from replay revenue. Avoid comparing a short live window with a longer regular-video accumulation.
  2. Compare views with monetized playbacks. Check total views, estimated monetized playbacks, and ad impressions. If views have increased while monetized playbacks have not kept pace, the monetized share is a likely contributor to lower RPM.
  3. Check ad pricing and audience geography. Review CPM and playback-based CPM alongside audience geography. A change in geography, season, targeting, or ad-format mix can affect ad prices independently of view count.
  4. Inspect live ad delivery. Confirm monetization is enabled. Review the mid-roll mode and, if it is manual, whether you actually inserted breaks. Also account for external embeds using autoplay: YouTube says live ads are turned off in that situation.
  5. Verify eligibility and monetization modules. Content that does not meet advertiser-friendly rules may receive limited or no ads. For Watch Page ads and Premium revenue on live or long-form content, accept the Watch Page Monetization Module. Fan funding requires the Commerce Product Module and activation of the relevant feature. See YouTube’s channel monetization policies and monetization module requirements.
  6. Review the rest of the revenue mix. Check estimated ad revenue and the Analytics breakdown of revenue sources, including Premium and fan-funding features where applicable. RPM alone cannot identify which source changed.

Should you enable automatic live mid-rolls?

YouTube recommends automatic live mid-rolls. It reported an average uplift of over 20% in in-stream ad revenue per hour for creators who turned on automatic live mid-rolls compared with creators who did not, averaged across 207 countries in January 2024. That is a platform-reported group comparison—not a promised result, an individual-channel forecast, or a stated RPM uplift.

Consider the viewing experience as well as delivery. For a documentary or other continuous program, test the setting and review what happens to viewing and revenue on your own channel. The statistic does not establish that every stream will earn more, nor does enabling a mode guarantee that ad slots serve.

Running a 24/7 stream without mistaking uptime for monetization

Keeping a stream online and improving its RPM are separate issues. A cloud service can keep uploaded videos looping to YouTube without a computer running at home, but it cannot ensure YouTube serves ads or set an individual channel’s RPM. StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for looping uploaded videos or playlists; see StreamNeo for details.
