Netflix problems on a phone usually come from the app’s local state, an outdated app or operating system, the network, a VPN or proxy, account-session data, or device compatibility—not necessarily from slow internet. Start by matching your symptom, then use the least-destructive fix for your phone.
Identify the failure before changing anything
Choose the description that best matches what you see:
- Netflix will not open, crashes, or closes immediately.
- The app opens to a blank screen or spins forever.
- Netflix says it cannot connect or shows a network error.
- You can browse the catalog, but a title will not play.
- Video buffers, skips, stutters, or appears distorted.
- The app or phone is reported as unsupported.
- You cannot sign in or are repeatedly returned to the sign-in screen.
- Downloads fail even though streaming works.
- Netflix works on Wi-Fi but not cellular data, or the reverse.
- Netflix works on another device but not this phone.
- The problem appears only when a VPN, proxy, Private Relay, security app, or work profile is active.
That comparison is useful: failure on every device using one Wi-Fi network points toward the router, ISP, DNS, filtering, or a service-side problem. Failure on one phone points more strongly toward its app data, operating system, permissions, storage, VPN, or compatibility.
Try these low-risk fixes first
- Check whether websites and other apps work.
- Force-close Netflix, then open it again.
- Turn the phone completely off, wait briefly, and turn it on. Locking the screen is not the same as restarting.
- Update Netflix from Google Play or the App Store.
- Install any available Android, iOS, or iPadOS update.
- Test Netflix on another Wi-Fi network and, where appropriate, on cellular data.
- Disable every VPN or proxy, including one built into antivirus, security software, a browser, a work profile, or the router.
- Sign out and sign in again if the app allows it.
- Use the platform-specific reset below: clear Netflix storage on Android, or reinstall Netflix on iPhone and iPad.
- If other devices are also affected, restart the modem and router.
- Record the exact error code and search Netflix Help Center for that code.
Netflix’s Android troubleshooting guidance covers restarting, clearing app data, reinstalling, updating Android, testing Fast.com, and restarting the home network: Netflix Android troubleshooting.

If Netflix will not open, freezes, or crashes
Android
- Restart the phone.
- Open Google Play Store, search for Netflix, and tap Update if offered. If the Netflix Play Store page itself will not open, investigate Google Play or device compatibility: Netflix crash guidance.
- Press and hold the Netflix icon, tap App info, then Storage & cache, and choose Clear storage or Clear data. Labels vary by manufacturer and Android version.
- Open Netflix and sign in again. Clearing storage removes downloaded titles and sign-in data, so have your password available.
- If necessary, uninstall Netflix from its Google Play page, restart the phone, reinstall it, and sign in. Uninstallation also removes downloads.
- Check for an Android system update in Settings. The exact menu path is manufacturer-specific.
Netflix documents the clear-storage procedure and its consequences at Can’t Connect to Netflix and Android troubleshooting.
iPhone or iPad
- Open the App Switcher. On devices without a Home button, swipe up from the bottom and hold; swipe up on Netflix. Gestures differ by model, so Apple’s instructions may be needed: Netflix app-freezing guidance.
- Restart the device. Netflix’s documented sequence is to hold the side button and one volume button, drag the power-off slider, wait about 10 seconds, then turn it on again. Older models use different buttons: iPhone/iPad network-error guidance.
- In the App Store, tap Search, find Netflix, and tap Update. If another Apple Account originally obtained the app and updating is blocked, delete and reinstall it.
- Install the latest iOS or iPadOS available for the device.
- Touch and hold Netflix, choose Remove App, then Delete App. Reinstall from the App Store and sign in. Deletion removes downloads.
For the current requirements, Netflix says the latest app requires iOS/iPadOS 18 or later (information published August 2026). Devices on iOS/iPadOS 12–17 may be able to redownload Netflix if it was previously installed; a device that never had the app may need to be replaced if it cannot run the current version. Details: Netflix iPhone and iPad requirements.
If Netflix says it cannot connect
Separate a phone problem from a network problem
- Try Netflix on another device using the same Wi-Fi.
- Try the affected phone on a different Wi-Fi network.
- Switch between Wi-Fi and cellular data.
- Open ordinary websites and another streaming service.
- Every device fails on one Wi-Fi: suspect the router, ISP, DNS, filtering, or a temporary service issue.
- Only one phone fails: prioritize app data, OS support, permissions, storage, VPN, and phone-specific networking.
- Wi-Fi works but cellular fails: check Netflix’s mobile-data permission, carrier restrictions, signal, data-saving settings, and plan limits.
- Cellular works but Wi-Fi fails: investigate the router, DNS, public-network rules, or VPN.
Run Netflix’s connection test
Open Fast.com in the phone’s browser and wait for the test. If it will not load, the phone may not have a functioning connection to Netflix. Tap Show more info when investigating a location mismatch or VPN. Fast.com measures the connection to Netflix; no single speed number proves that playback will work because stability, congestion, Wi-Fi quality, device capability, and connection type also matter. Netflix explains the test at its Android troubleshooting page.

Restart the home network
- Turn off the phone.
- Unplug the modem and router.
- Wait 30 seconds.
- Reconnect the modem and router.
- Wait about one minute for them to reconnect.
- Turn on the phone and test Netflix.
Some equipment needs longer. Hotels, schools, cafés, workplaces, and hospitals may intentionally block streaming. Hotspots, weak cellular connections, and satellite networks can also be too unstable. Ask the network administrator whether streaming is allowed rather than attempting to bypass a restriction. See Netflix’s iPhone/iPad network guidance.

VPN, proxy, DNS, and location errors
Disable standalone VPNs, antivirus VPNs, work or school profiles, browser privacy services, router-level VPNs, and proxies, then close and reopen Netflix. Netflix says these services can make your connection appear to come from another country. At Fast.com, compare the Client country with your actual location. If it is wrong after the VPN is off, contact your ISP. Guidance: VPN and proxy troubleshooting.
Do not install a VPN as a fix. Netflix does not support VPN use with ad-supported viewing, and VPNs can trigger region or connection errors. Ad-supported plan details are at Netflix’s ad-supported VPN guidance. Resetting network settings can help only after these checks; use the phone maker’s current instructions and expect saved Wi-Fi networks, passwords, VPN settings, and related preferences to be removed.

If the catalog loads but playback fails
A title will not start
- Try a different title. One failing title may be temporary or title-specific.
- Restart Netflix and the phone.
- Update Netflix and the operating system.
- Test another network and disable VPN or proxy services.
- Clear Android storage or reinstall on iPhone/iPad if every title fails on that phone.
Buffering, skipping, or stuttering
- Check connection stability, not just peak speed.
- Move closer to the Wi-Fi router and place the router in an open location away from interference.
- Check whether other people or devices are saturating the connection.
- Prevent the phone from repeatedly switching between Wi-Fi and cellular.
- Review battery-saving and data-saving modes.
- Be cautious with public hotspots, mobile hotspots, and satellite connections.
Netflix’s video-quality guidance is available at distorted, glitchy, skipping, or stuttering video.
Black screen or distorted video
After the app, update, network, and VPN checks, disconnect screen-recording, mirroring, or external-display accessories and test again. Device DRM or compatibility limits can affect video output. A black screen on a phone does not automatically mean the display is broken. Netflix has separate guidance for black screen with no sound and distorted video.

Error codes beginning with “R,” including R22-1 and R39-1, can mean that the Netflix app or operating system is no longer supported. Update both. If Netflix is missing from Google Play, the phone may be incompatible, not Play Protect certified, restricted by parental controls, or using an app store that does not offer the app. Check certification and supported alternatives, including documented Samsung Galaxy cases, at Netflix app availability guidance.
If sign-in fails
- Try signing in at Netflix.com in the phone’s browser.
- If browser sign-in works, stale app data is more likely than a subscription problem.
- Sign out of the app if possible.
- Clear Android storage, or reinstall Netflix on iPhone/iPad.
- Sign in again and search Netflix Help Center for the exact code.
NSEZ-403 means Netflix cannot connect the account at that time in the relevant troubleshooting flow; it does not by itself prove that the account is suspended or unpaid. See Netflix’s account-connection guidance.
