Why Is My TV Pixelated? Causes and Solutions

A pixelated TV picture usually means the video reaching the screen is compressed, interrupted, weakened, or being sent in an unsuitable format—not necessarily that the TV panel is broken. The quickest way to find the cause is to check the TV’s built-in picture test, then compare another app, channel, or input.

The five-minute diagnosis

  1. Check the TV menu and Picture Test. Open the television’s Picture Test, Screen Test, or Self Diagnosis feature. If the test image is clean, the source, connection, or external device is more likely to be responsible.
  2. Try another source. Switch between a built-in app, another streaming app, an antenna channel, a cable box, and an HDMI device if available.
  3. Restart the relevant equipment. Restart the TV and source device. For streaming, also restart the modem and router.
  4. Inspect the connection. Check Wi-Fi, coaxial cables, HDMI connectors, splitters, and intermediary equipment such as receivers, soundbars, and HDMI switches.
  5. Identify the pattern. A problem affecting one app or input usually points away from the TV panel. A problem affecting every source, including the menu, deserves a TV-side diagnosis.

Manufacturers use this same source-isolation approach. Menu names and locations vary by model, region, and software version; if you cannot find the test, search the manufacturer’s support page for your model and “Picture Test” or “Self Diagnosis.” See Samsung’s picture troubleshooting guidance, LG’s screen troubleshooting guidance, and Sony’s HDMI and picture guidance.

What the symptom usually indicates

What you see Likely explanation
Blocky squares during streaming Weak Wi-Fi, packet loss, congestion, adaptive bitrate reduction, or a poor stream
Brief breakup, freezing, or flashes of blocks An intermittent network, antenna, cable, satellite, HDMI, or source-device signal
Soft but stable picture Low-resolution content, a reduced stream quality, or a source outputting 720p or 1080i
Colored blocks, sparkles, or flashing dots HDMI cable, port, bandwidth, or source-format trouble
Lines or permanent blocks on every input Possible display-panel, mainboard, or internal video fault
Jagged edges, combing, or motion artifacts Interlaced video or aggressive motion processing rather than classic pixelation

Streaming apps: Wi-Fi, bitrate, and device problems

Streaming services adjust video quality to match current network conditions. A temporary fall in performance can make the picture blurry or blocky while playback continues. Buffering means the player cannot obtain enough data to continue; pixelation can mean it is receiving a severely reduced-quality stream or experiencing late or corrupted data. They may occur together, but they are different symptoms.

Try these steps

  1. Play another title in the same app.
  2. Try a different streaming app.
  3. Check whether other devices also have connection problems.
  4. Pause downloads, cloud backups, online gaming, and other heavy traffic.
  5. Restart the modem and router, then restart the TV or streaming player.
  6. Move the router and TV or streaming player closer together and remove obstructions where practical.
  7. Test Ethernet if the TV, player, or router has an available port.
  8. Try the same program on another device.

On Roku devices, the network diagnostic is generally Home → Settings → Network → About → Check connection, although labels can differ by device and software version. Roku recommends checking network status, reducing competing use, restarting networking equipment, and improving placement in its playback troubleshooting guide and Wi-Fi guidance.

If only one title or app is affected, the problem may be that title, the app, or a service-side issue. Do not assume a faster internet plan will solve it: Wi-Fi interference, router placement, the player, the app, and the service can all be the bottleneck.

Cable and satellite television

Pixelation on cable or satellite channels is commonly a signal-path problem. It may result from a loose or damaged coaxial cable, a poor connector or splitter, a failing set-top box, provider trouble, a channel-specific broadcast fault, or— for satellite—weather-related reception problems.

  1. Check whether every channel is affected or only one.
  2. Restart the cable or satellite box.
  3. Tighten both coaxial connections by hand.
  4. Remove unnecessary splitters or test another coaxial outlet.
  5. Check the HDMI cable between the box and TV.
  6. Try another HDMI input and, temporarily, another known-good HDMI cable.
  7. Compare the box with the TV’s built-in apps or another source.

Older boxes can output interlaced video such as 480i, 576i, or 1080i. The TV must combine alternating image lines, which can produce jagged edges, flicker, or motion artifacts. Roku notes that certain 8K Roku TV configurations provide de-interlacing support on HDMI 3 and HDMI 4. This is model-specific, not a universal rule for Roku or other TVs; see Roku’s cable and satellite picture guidance. Contact the provider if several channels break up, the issue returns after rebooting, or another TV shows the same failure from the same service.

Over-the-air antenna reception

Digital antenna reception often fails abruptly rather than gradually. A marginal signal may look perfect and then break into blocks, freeze, or disappear.

Improve the signal path by moving the antenna higher or nearer a window, pointing it toward the transmitters, checking for loose or corroded connectors, and rescanning channels after repositioning it. Also test with a shorter known-good coaxial cable and without a splitter. Metal cabinets, buildings, terrain, trees, long cable runs, electrical interference, and a failed amplifier can all reduce reception. Use the TV’s signal-strength or signal-information screen if it provides one.

An amplifier is not an automatic solution. It can help a genuinely weak signal over a long cable run, but it can overload a tuner when the incoming signal is already strong or amplify interference. Test placement, connectors, cable, and splitters first. Sony discusses antenna direction and location in its reception guidance; LG also recommends checking the antenna cable and signal settings.

HDMI cables, ports, and connected devices

HDMI trouble can appear as intermittent blocks, sparkles, flashing dots, dropouts, distorted video, or a black screen. It may only appear when 4K, HDR, or high-frame-rate video begins because those formats require more bandwidth.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Turn off the TV and source device.
  2. Disconnect and firmly reconnect the HDMI cable at both ends.
  3. Confirm that the TV is set to the correct HDMI input.
  4. Try another HDMI port.
  5. Try a shorter, known-good HDMI cable.
  6. Bypass an AV receiver, soundbar, splitter, switch, or capture device.
  7. Temporarily set the source to 1080p, 60 Hz, and HDR off if applicable.
  8. Update the TV and source-device software.

If the lower setting makes the picture stable, the problem may involve cable bandwidth, cable length, an intermediary device, or compatibility. It is a diagnostic fallback, not necessarily the best permanent setting.

For demanding 4K HDR setups, a certified Premium High Speed HDMI cable may be appropriate; certain 4K high-refresh-rate and 8K configurations may require an Ultra High Speed cable. The required cable depends on resolution, frame rate, HDR format, length, and every device in the path. A more expensive or gold-plated cable does not improve a digital picture that is already working correctly. Certification information is available from the HDMI Licensing Administrator. Samsung includes an HDMI cable test on some models, commonly under All Settings → Support → Device Care → Self Diagnosis → HDMI Troubleshooting on newer televisions, but availability and paths vary. The test may be intended for cables shorter than 2 meters, so results are not necessarily reliable for longer runs.

Resolution, refresh rate, HDR, and picture settings

A source may be configured for a resolution, refresh rate, HDR mode, or interlaced format that the TV—or an older receiver, soundbar, or switch—cannot handle reliably. Confirm that the source is connected to the appropriate HDMI input and that the entire signal path supports the selected format.

For a neutral test, use the TV’s Standard or default picture mode, select the correct native aspect-ratio option, and temporarily reduce aggressive processing. Check sharpness, noise reduction, MPEG or digital noise reduction, motion smoothing, HDR, overscan, zoom, and energy-saving modes. Excessive sharpening can create halos and artificial edges; motion processing can produce ghosting or other artifacts. Roku discusses motion-related artifacts in its motion-blur guidance, while LG recommends checking aspect ratio and using 16:9 where appropriate.

Sometimes the content is simply poor quality

A high-resolution screen cannot restore detail that was never present. Older programs, standard-definition channels, heavily compressed live sports, user-uploaded video, free streaming channels, and low-resolution content enlarged to fill a 4K or 8K display may look soft or blocky.

Compare a 4K title with an HD title, a different app, a local file or game, and the TV’s internal test image. If one program looks poor while other sources are clean and stable, the content provider or broadcast is more likely at fault than the TV.

How to tell whether the TV is defective

Run the internal Picture Test after confirming that the abnormality is not limited to one input. If the test image is clean but an HDMI device, channel, or app is pixelated, do not replace the TV before testing that source path.

If the test itself is pixelated or shows persistent lines, dots, or blocks—and the same marks appear in the same place across inputs—the likely causes include the panel, mainboard, internal video processing, or display connection. Photograph or record the problem, note which sources were tested, and check warranty or manufacturer service options. A factory reset may be reasonable after source isolation, but it is unlikely to repair a physical panel fault.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What to replace—or who to call

  • Test an HDMI cable first when one HDMI source fails, especially during 4K HDR or high-frame-rate playback.
  • Try Ethernet before buying a router when streaming improves on a wired connection.
  • Consider router or mesh changes only when the TV consistently has weak Wi-Fi and other devices or rooms show similar coverage problems.
  • Improve the antenna path before buying an amplifier. Placement, splitters, connectors, and cable condition matter first.
  • Replace a streaming device when its apps are outdated, it overheats, or another player works reliably on the same network and TV.
  • Contact the cable or satellite provider when multiple channels break up or the same service fails on another TV.
  • Contact the TV manufacturer or a repair professional when the internal Picture Test is defective or permanent marks remain across every source.

Decision tree

  • Every source, including the menu, is affected: run Picture Test and pursue manufacturer service.
  • Only one HDMI device is affected: swap the cable, change ports, bypass intermediary equipment, and lower the source output temporarily.
  • Only streaming apps are affected: compare apps, run the network test, restart networking equipment, reduce traffic, and try Ethernet.
  • Only antenna channels are affected: reposition and rescan, check coaxial connections, remove splitters, and inspect signal information.
  • Only cable or satellite channels are affected: restart the box, check coax and HDMI, compare channels, and contact the provider if the problem persists.
  • Only fast motion looks wrong: compare another source, reduce motion processing, and check for interlaced video or low-bitrate compression.
