Clear audio with choppy video is a symptom, not a diagnosis. It can come from the video encoder, the connection carrying the stream to YouTube, YouTube ingest, or playback on a viewer’s device or network. Clear audio does not prove the video connection is healthy: YouTube tracks audio and video health separately.
Start by finding where the stutter appears, then use OBS and YouTube’s health indicators to choose a fix. Don’t lower quality or replace equipment until the evidence points to a cause.
First find where the video becomes choppy
Compare the stream at each stage. A smooth local output but choppy YouTube playback narrows the investigation to what happens after encoding, but does not by itself distinguish YouTube ingest from a viewer’s playback problem.
- OBS preview or local recording: If either is choppy, investigate the source video, computer, and encoder before focusing on the viewer’s connection.
- YouTube Live Control Room: Check stream-health messages during the same period as the stutter.
- Live player and archive: Check from more than one device and network. If only one viewer has trouble, investigate that device or connection. Compare the archive after YouTube has finished processing it.
- Another streaming service: OBS suggests testing another service as one way to tell whether the problem is specific to the service. This is a diagnostic comparison, not proof of the cause.
For a useful test, include movement and audio like the actual 24/7 program, and monitor YouTube stream health while it runs. A static image or brief test may not reproduce the conditions that cause the stutter.

Read the health signals before changing settings
Check OBS dropped frames and connection status
In OBS, watch the dropped-frames counter and connection indicator while the problem is happening. A rising dropped-frame count together with a yellow or red connection indicator supports a connection-stability or bitrate-capacity problem. OBS explains its troubleshooting steps at OBS Project’s dropped frames guide.
If the local recording is smooth but OBS reports dropped frames, the encoded video may not be reaching YouTube steadily. Audio can remain clear while video frames are dropped; the audio track alone cannot rule out a transmission problem.
Use YouTube’s specific stream-health message
In YouTube Live Control Room, inspect stream health and note the message shown during the stutter. YouTube’s health documentation distinguishes conditions such as bitrateHigh, bitrateLow, frameRateHigh, gopSizeLong, videoCodec, and videoIngestionStarved. The last means YouTube is not receiving enough video to maintain smooth streaming, so viewers may experience buffering. That definition describes a particular health condition; it is not a diagnosis based solely on choppy video. See YouTube’s stream health documentation.

Use the message you actually see. A bitrate or keyframe warning calls for checking settings; a starvation message points to insufficient video reaching ingest; no encoder or ingest warning alongside trouble on only one device makes viewer-side playback worth investigating.

A speed-test maximum is not the same as upload capacity that remains stable for a continuous stream. YouTube advises choosing a quality reliable for the connection and testing upload bitrate. Its recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate.

These are YouTube’s recommendations, not a guarantee that a stream at another bitrate will stutter or that a recommended bitrate will work on an unstable connection. See YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions for the platform’s current guidance.

If OBS evidence points to insufficient or unstable upload, lower the video bitrate in measured steps and retest. OBS suggests using 75% of total upload speed as a starting point when reducing bitrate; that is OBS troubleshooting guidance, not a universal YouTube target. A lower bitrate may make the connection easier to sustain but reduces image quality. Choose the highest setting that remains stable during a representative test.
Verify the video encoder configuration
Compare the encoder’s actual output with YouTube’s published guidance and any warning in Live Control Room. YouTube lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 as video codecs; recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a frame rate up to 60 fps, and a keyframe interval of 2 seconds, not exceeding 4 seconds. Its guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS for ingest and AAC or MP3 for audio.
- Codec: Confirm that the selected video codec is supported and that YouTube is not reporting a codec health issue.
- Bitrate mode: Use CBR as YouTube recommends, and set a rate suited to the chosen codec, resolution, frame rate, and stable upload.
- Frame rate: Keep it within YouTube’s stated limit of up to 60 fps and check for a
frameRateHighwarning. - Keyframes: Set a 2-second interval and do not exceed 4 seconds. YouTube notes that an overly long keyframe interval can cause buffering; check for
gopSizeLong.
Settings are connected: changing resolution, frame rate, or codec changes which bitrate recommendation is relevant. Use the matching row above rather than applying a single bitrate to every configuration.

If network evidence points to a connection problem
Try low-risk checks before buying hardware. OBS notes that Wi-Fi may be unstable for streaming and recommends a wired connection. If practical, test Ethernet and compare the dropped-frame counter and YouTube health messages before and after.
- Test wired networking: Connect the streaming computer to the router with a known-good cable. This is a comparison test, not a guarantee that a new cable will fix the issue.
- Check software and drivers: Temporarily investigate VPNs, firewall or security software, network-prioritization tools bundled with the computer, and network drivers. Change security settings cautiously and restore protections after testing.
- Restart network equipment if appropriate: A modem or router can be part of the path. Restarting may help identify a temporary problem, but does not establish that the equipment is faulty.
- Compare another ingest server or service: OBS suggests trying another ingest server and, as a diagnostic, another streaming service. A difference can help localize the issue but is not by itself a root-cause finding.
- Contact the ISP if it persists: If connection-related indicators continue after these checks, ask the internet provider to investigate sustained upload stability.
OBS’s dynamic bitrate adjustment can lower bitrate when the connection cannot keep up. It is a fallback that may reduce connection-related dropped frames, but it does not repair the underlying connection and can reduce image quality. See the OBS dropped frames guide for its troubleshooting details.
For a 24/7 children’s stream, test the actual program
Run a representative test with the same video movement, audio, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate intended for the continuous stream. Watch OBS statistics and YouTube stream health during the test. If the health signal appears only intermittently, record when it happens and compare it with changes in dropped frames, settings, or viewer reports.

Separately, make sure the videos and audio you broadcast are authorized for your use and that the channel follows YouTube’s applicable live-streaming and monetization policies. A technically healthy stream does not establish that its content is eligible for monetization or cleared for broadcast. Review YouTube’s current live streaming requirements and encoder guidance and the relevant copyright and channel policies before running a continuous children’s stream.
