In the United States, Disney says it requires a birthdate for every Disney+ account and profile, but adult users do not have to identify a gender: they can choose “Prefer not to say.” The request is legitimate when it appears inside the official Disney+ app or account interface. Disney says it uses the information for age eligibility, personalization, recommendations, service improvement and advertising. Requirements differ by country and, in some places, subscription plan.
What information is Disney+ asking for?
Disney’s U.S. Help Center page, “Why does Disney+ need my birthdate and gender?”, dated September 3, 2025, describes two profile fields: a specific date of birth and a gender response. The request can apply to household profiles as well as the profile used by the person paying for the subscription. Disney says a birthdate is required even for U.S. Junior Mode profiles; gender is not required for profiles associated with people under 18. Read Disney’s U.S. explanation.
For U.S. adult profiles, Disney describes gender as required but provides “Prefer not to say.” That means the profile must receive a response, but the user need not disclose a gender identity. The policy does not require a binary answer.

Birthdate
Disney says the date helps confirm that the subscriber meets the minimum age to purchase Disney+, support age-related legal obligations, personalize the experience and recommendations, improve and develop the service, and deliver targeted or age-appropriate advertising. Disney’s stated reasons therefore extend beyond parental controls.

Gender
Disney says gender information may be used to personalize the viewing experience, provide recommendations and product features, analyze and improve the service, and deliver targeted advertising. Selecting “Prefer not to say” is the U.S. option for declining to identify a gender while continuing to use the service, according to Disney’s page.
Disney’s broader privacy materials also describe uses of personal information for service operation and improvement, personalization, advertising and marketing, and legal or business purposes. Its U.S. state privacy notice lists demographic information such as age and gender among information that may be collected and used for service, advertising, marketing and product-improvement purposes. That does not establish that Disney sells raw birthdate or gender records to advertisers. See Disney’s current privacy policy and U.S. state privacy rights.
Is the request legitimate, or could it be a scam?
The request matches Disney’s published policy when it appears in the official Disney+ app or account interface. That does not make every email or text claiming to be from Disney genuine. Don’t use an unexpected message’s link to enter personal information.

- Open the Disney+ app directly, or type the official Disney+ website address into your browser.
- Sign in without following the message’s embedded link and check whether the same profile-information request appears in your account.
- If the request appears only in an unexpected email or message, do not submit information there. Contact Disney through its official account and billing Help Center.
What happens if you refuse?
If you don’t want to give a birthdate
For the United States, Disney says users who do not want to provide a birthdate may cancel their account. Its published U.S. guidance does not offer a way to keep the account active while refusing the date. Do not assume that switching to a no-ads plan removes this U.S. requirement.
If you don’t want to disclose gender
On U.S. adult profiles, select “Prefer not to say.” It declines gender identification without being the same as refusing the birthdate request.
Regional differences
Disney’s requirements are not identical worldwide. Its UK guidance, dated March 16, 2026, ties the birthdate requirement to Disney+ Standard With Ads and says customers who do not want to provide a date can move to Standard or Premium, which are no-ads plans, or cancel. This is a UK option, not a published U.S. workaround. Disney’s regional guidance can also differ in how it treats adults, children and Junior Mode, so check the Help Center for the country associated with your account.

In the United States, Disney says the birthdate is not directly linked to the content rating and does not automatically block a particular show or movie. Content restrictions are configured separately through parental controls.
- Birthdate: Used for purposes Disney lists such as eligibility and personalization.
- Profile content rating: Sets the rating limit for what a profile can browse or search. Disney says titles above that setting are hidden.
- Profile PIN: Helps prevent unauthorized access to a profile or changes to its settings.
Parents should set a child’s content rating and PIN through profile controls rather than treating the birthdate prompt as a substitute. See Disney’s parental-controls guidance.

How to limit advertising personalization and protect your privacy
Use the non-disclosure option where offered
For a U.S. adult profile, choose “Prefer not to say” if you do not want to provide gender. Disney’s account page says gender can be changed later in profile settings through a web browser or mobile app.
Check demographic-targeting controls in your region
Disney’s regional guidance gives this path where the feature is available: Profiles → Edit Profiles → select a profile → Privacy & Data → Demographic Targeting → Off. Disney says ads may still appear, but they will not be personalized using demographic information. Disney says the control is unavailable for under-18 profiles because it does not personalize ads on those profiles. Availability and labels may differ by country; do not assume this switch appears on every U.S. account.
Use applicable U.S. privacy choices
Disney says some U.S. residents may opt out of targeted advertising, sale or sharing of personal information where applicable, and that it supports Global Privacy Control where available. Its privacy choices are described in the Home country and privacy choices and data-sharing Help Center pages.

An advertising opt-out is not a promise of no ads, no data collection, deletion of information already collected, or removal of the birthdate requirement. Disney says advertising may continue after an opt-out, including ads based on information processed before the opt-out.
Consider a plan change only for the concern it addresses
A no-ads plan may suit someone whose main concern is seeing Disney+ ads, but it should not be treated as a complete privacy solution: Disney’s U.S. guidance does not say it eliminates the birthdate request or all account, usage, billing and technical data processing. In the UK, moving to a no-ads plan is specifically listed as an alternative to providing a birthdate for Standard With Ads. Plan availability and change options vary by region and billing partner; Disney explains them in its plan-management guide.
Can you change the information later?
- Birthdate: Disney says it generally cannot be changed through ordinary profile controls after signup. Contact Disney support if it is incorrect.
- Gender: Disney says it can be changed through profile settings on the website or mobile app.
Avoid entering an obviously false date just to dismiss the prompt. Disney does not promise that an inaccurate date can be freely corrected, and it may create problems with age eligibility or account details.

What to do if the prompt keeps returning or fails to save
- Confirm that you are using the official app or website and that you completed the save step.
- Sign in on another device to see whether the profile information has synchronized.
- If you are using an older Apple device, Disney flags an error affecting iOS versions 11, 12 and 13 related to birthdate or gender collection. Disney recommends updating iOS, trying another device or contacting support.
- If your subscription is billed through Apple, Google, Amazon, Hulu, Roku or another partner, plan changes may need to be managed through that billing partner; Disney says available options can vary.
- If the same request appears only in a message and not in your account, treat the message as unverified and contact Disney through its official Help Center.
