As New York’s theater district moved north, the nickname became closely associated with Times Square. The reason for the name is well established; who first coined it is not.
What “Great White Way” means
“White” refers to the bright appearance of Broadway after dark, when electric lighting and illuminated advertising lit up the street. The New York Public Library describes the nickname as emerging as Broadway became one of the first American streets fully lit by electric light, with theater signs and other advertisements reinforcing the effect. The phrase is a nickname, not the name of a precisely bounded district. Broadway is a long avenue, and the stretch most associated with the theater district shifted as theaters moved uptown. The nickname’s association followed that movement toward Times Square.
How the nickname became associated with Times Square
Broadway’s theaters did not always cluster around Times Square. As the theater district moved north, the illuminated avenue and its signs helped carry the “Great White Way” label with it. A Library of Congress catalog record for a period image titled “The great white way” shows Broadway looking south from 42nd Street, documenting the phrase’s connection to the avenue. The catalog identifies the image but does not establish how the expression originated. Library of Congress: “The great white way”

A 1908 Broadway history describes the avenue between 34th and 47th Streets as a lively area of hotels, restaurants, and theaters, and links its nighttime electric lights to the nickname. That account offers a snapshot of one important stretch; it should not be mistaken for a permanent definition of the “Great White Way.” The Greatest Street in the World (1908)
When did the phrase first appear?
A February 3, 1902, headline in the New York Evening Telegram reads “Found on the Great White Way.” It is a documented early print appearance, not definitive proof that no one used the phrase earlier. An American Dialect Society archive also records “Found on the Great Highway” headlines in the same newspaper in November 1901, before the 1902 “Great White Way” headline. A 1926 Morning Telegraph recollection credited reporter Shep Friedman with naming Broadway. Because that attribution is retrospective and the surviving newspaper chronology does not settle the phrase’s first use, Friedman’s role is best described as a later attribution rather than a proven, undisputed coinage. The American Dialect Society archive reproduces the references and discusses this uncertainty. American Dialect Society archive: “Great White Way (1902)”
Advertiser O. J. Gude also belongs to the story of Broadway’s visual transformation: the New York Public Library connects him with prominent signs. That context helps explain why illuminated advertising shaped the street’s image, but it does not establish that Gude invented the nickname.
