“Avast” is a real nautical command meaning stop or hold fast. “Avast, ye matey” is a comic pirate line from later popular performance, not a greeting historical sailors were known to use with one another. The “Arrr” and the West Country-flavored voice that usually accompany it come mostly from 20th-century screen portrayal, and they were never one accent shared by all pirates.
What “avast” means
In sailing usage, “avast” is an order to stop, cease, or hold fast. The word has since picked up a theatrical life of its own, and dictionary entries now separate the original command from the looser senses that pirate-themed writing and performance have added. The table below lays out the senses as recorded in the Wiktionary entry for the word, which cites an Oxford English Dictionary reference dated July 2023.
| Sense | Meaning | Status in the dictionary entry |
|---|---|---|
| Nautical command | Stop, cease, or hold fast | The core sense of the word at sea |
| Pirate-imitation informal sense | “Listen!” or “Pay attention!” | Recorded, but the usage note calls this a misconstrual of the nautical sense |
| U.S. Navy deck command | “Avast hauling,” an order used in deck operations | Recorded from 1950 and possibly still in use |
The practical point for writers and viewers is that “listen” is a modern pirate-film gloss, not what the word meant on a ship’s deck.
Reading “avast, ye matey” literally
The usage note in the same dictionary entry parses the full line as “Desist, you novice seaman.” Read that way, the line is a rebuke. “Ye” is an old form of “you,” and “matey” is a familiar term for a shipmate, so the phrase sounds like a sailor telling a green hand to stop what he is doing. It is a playful stage line, not a standard friendly greeting, and treating it as one misreads the original sense.

Where the word probably comes from
Dictionary and language sources generally trace “avast” to a worn-down Dutch phrase meaning “hold fast.” This origin is stated as probable, not certain. Sea vocabulary was borrowed and reshaped heavily among European seafaring peoples, which makes a Dutch link plausible, but no single documented chain of change has settled the question. If you cite the etymology, use the word “probably.”
How the pirate voice took shape
The familiar pirate sound followed a sequence from book to screen to popular convention, and each step is documented in a different kind of source.

Stevenson’s Long John Silver, 1883
Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island was published in 1883 and introduced Long John Silver, the one-legged cook who became the template for the cheerful, dangerous pirate. The novel is a literary text. It shows how Stevenson wrote a character for readers in 1883, not how pirates of the 1700s actually talked.
Robert Newton’s film performance, 1950
Disney’s 1950 film Treasure Island cast Robert Newton as Silver, and his performance did more than any other single source to fix the modern voice. Newton used a thick West Country accent and frequent “Arrr!” and “Matey,” according to the National Maritime Historical Society. Language explainers credit him with popularizing the “Arr” sound in pirate portrayals, and they note his 1952 role as Blackbeard as a further step in the same vein.

Why “Arr” predates Newton, and why he still matters
Newton did not invent every pirate expression. Some pirate depictions used “Arr” before the 1950s. The defensible claim is narrower: Newton was the dominant popularizer, and his performance shaped the sound most viewers now associate with pirates. Documentaries and articles that say he “invented” pirate speech overstate the evidence.
Did real pirates talk like this?
Probably not in any uniform way. Pirates came from many regions, including Europe, Africa, the Caribbean, and Asia, and they would have spoken their native languages and varieties. The screen stereotype assumes a single voice, and the historical record does not support that.

| Question | Historical evidence | Screen stereotype |
|---|---|---|
| Origins of crews | Varied; pirates came from several continents | One recognizable type of rogue |
| Language | Native languages and dialects, not one pirate tongue | English with a shared set of stock phrases |
| Accent | Not recorded; no single regional sound can be established | Thick West Country accent with rhotic “Arr” |
| Recordings | None exist | Film performance from 1950 preserved on screen |
What the evidence can and cannot show
Vocabulary is easier to document than sound. Mignon Fogarty, the language writer and host of Grammar Girl, puts the limit plainly: “We don’t have any recordings or many writings with pronunciation clues to help us figure it out.” That sentence applies to pronunciation and accent. It does not mean that maritime vocabulary or written pirate records are absent. Claims about how a historical pirate sounded should therefore be avoided unless they rest on a clearly labeled reconstruction.

International Talk Like a Pirate Day is a modern parody holiday founded in 1995 by John Baur and Mark Summers and observed on September 19. It is a playful observance that often leans on the Newton-era voice. It tells you something about how the stereotype spread, not about how pirates spoke.

Checking a pirate-speech claim
When you meet a claim about pirate language in a film, article, or documentary, these checks separate evidence from performance:
- Is the source a dictionary entry, a primary text, a film, or a modern explainer? Each supports different kinds of claims.
- Does the claim describe a nautical sense of the word, or a theatrical sense added later?
- Does it say the accent was recorded or documented? If not, it is a reconstruction or a performance.
- Does it treat “pirates” as one people with one language? The evidence points to many origins and many languages.
- Does it credit a single performer with inventing the sound? The better-supported claim is that a performer popularized it.
Sources used for this article are the Wiktionary entry for “avast,” the National Maritime Historical Society, language explainers including Grammar Girl, and the text of Stevenson’s novel. Figures and dates were checked as of October 2026, and the dates for the novel, the film, and the holiday are stable.
