She later explained that caring for her daughter Hope, who has type 1 diabetes, was one part of the decision—not the only reason.
What Kotb said when she announced her departure
On September 26, 2024, Kotb told colleagues and viewers she would leave TODAY early the following year. She described turning 60 that summer as a moment of clarity and said her daughters and mother needed more of her time. The Associated Press reported her announcement: “I saw it all so clearly: my broadcast career has been beyond meaningful, a new decade of my life lies ahead, and now my daughters and my mom need and deserve a bigger slice of my time pie.” The AP’s report places her decision in the context she gave publicly: a meaningful career, a new decade, and a desire to prioritize family.
How Hope’s health needs factored into the decision
When Kotb returned to TODAY on May 28, 2025, she spoke more specifically about Hope’s type 1 diabetes care. She said the frequent monitoring and the possibility of needing attention at night could be distracting while she was working, and that she wanted to be present for her daughter.
Kotb also cautioned against reducing her departure to Hope’s condition. As quoted by the Los Angeles Times, she said: “But I would never, ever want Hope to one day grow up and say, ‘Oh, my mom left her job because [of me].’ It wasn’t that alone. But if you look at it cumulatively, it was a part of that decision.” Her later explanation adds a personal factor to the family-time rationale she had already given; it does not replace it.

When she left—and whether she left NBC
Kotb’s final day as a TODAY co-anchor was January 10, 2025. NBCUniversal’s career profile said she would end her time as co-anchor of the fourth hour that day. The AP reported that she planned to remain part of NBC, and Kotb said in her departure note: “Happily and gratefully, I plan to remain a part of the NBC family, the longest work relationship I’ve been lucky enough to hold close to my heart. I’ll be around. How could I not? Family is family and you all will always be a part of mine.” Her departure was from her TODAY hosting role, not an announced exit from NBC altogether.
