The terrifying dragon still missing from the reported House of the Dragon material is the Cannibal: a wild dragon from George R. R. Martin’s Fire & Blood whose reputation rests on eating other dragons and their eggs. That is book lore, not confirmation that HBO will introduce him.
Who is the most terrifying dragon?
The Cannibal is a wild dragon said to live on Dragonstone. In Fire & Blood lore, he is large and coal black, and is known for preying on other dragons and consuming their eggs. The Ringer describes him as rumored to be among the oldest dragons in Westeros; the age is a rumor, not a verified number. The Ringer’s Season 2 guide summarizes these book descriptions.
His fearsome reputation comes from more than appearance: he is wild and associated with attacking creatures that other dragons—and their riders—might be expected to leave alone. The lore does not establish a measurable threat ranking, body count, or precise age.
How does the Cannibal compare with Grey Ghost and Sheepstealer?
| Dragon | Book-lore description | Screen status in the cited season coverage |
|---|---|---|
| The Cannibal | Wild, large, coal black, and known for eating dragons and eggs; his extreme age is described as rumor. | Reported as unseen. |
| Grey Ghost | A wild Dragonstone dragon that is rarely spotted and feeds on fish. | Listed among notable book dragons not yet shown. |
| Sheepstealer | A wild Dragonstone dragon associated with hunting sheep. | Season 3 coverage reports that he has appeared and been claimed by Rhaena. |
The book descriptions come from The Ringer’s dragon guide; the screen-status descriptions reflect GamesRadar’s guide to the dragons in the series. The distinction matters: the Cannibal’s notoriety is predation, Grey Ghost’s is elusiveness, and Sheepstealer’s is sheep hunting. Sheepstealer’s reported appearance also makes older book-based lists of unseen dragons out of date.

Has the Cannibal appeared in House of the Dragon?
In the season coverage cited here, the Cannibal remains unseen, as does Grey Ghost. Sheepstealer, by contrast, has been revealed and claimed by Rhaena. This is a status report on the covered material, not a guarantee about what later episodes may show.
No official confirmation of a future Cannibal appearance is established by the cited coverage. His absence so far does not prove that the series has ruled him out, and speculation about production costs or story choices should not be mistaken for a confirmed explanation. A comparison with another dragon’s size is not proof that the Cannibal has been removed from the adaptation.

Why does the show’s Sheepstealer change matter?
The series has not followed the book’s Sheepstealer-and-Nettles story exactly. GamesRadar reports that showrunner Ryan Condal explained the choice to have Rhaena claim Sheepstealer instead, saying the story’s point of view and family focus made it feel more apt to involve a family member. That adaptation decision is evidence that the show can rearrange book events; it says nothing by itself about whether the Cannibal will appear. GamesRadar’s report on Condal’s explanation covers the change.

The Cannibal’s reputation comes from George R. R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, the book behind the show’s Targaryen history. It is useful for the dragons’ book lore, but it is not a show companion guide, and book events should not be assumed to transfer unchanged to the screen.
