Hayes Campbell’s watch is a TAG Heuer Carrera, but its importance in The Idea of You is less about luxury than about what it does in the story: after Hayes and Solène’s first hookup, he leaves it behind as a reason to see her again. As the relationship shifts between closeness and separation, the watch moves between them, making it a recurring visual marker of their connection.
What watch does Hayes wear?
It is a TAG Heuer Carrera. GQ’s May 6, 2024 report describes the prop as a 39 mm watch with a stainless-steel case and bracelet, a smooth bezel, a silver dial, matching indices and hands, and a white date window at 6 o’clock. The report does not identify an exact reference number, so those details do not establish a precise retail model.
GQ’s account of how the watch became a major prop in the film draws on production placement coordinator Karen Neasi, who said its sleek, understated look suited both Hayes, a British pop star, and Solène, an art-gallery owner.
Why does Hayes leave the watch with Solène?
After their initial hookup, Hayes leaves the watch at Solène’s home. The forgotten object gives him a practical pretext to return and see her again. Its importance begins with that small plot move: it turns a private encounter into a possible next meeting.

What does the watch mean as the relationship changes?
GQ reports that the watch passes between the characters in step with their relationship: Solène has it when they are together, while Hayes has it when they are apart. That recurring exchange makes the object a quiet visual shorthand for their changing access to one another.
One reasonable interpretation is that the watch makes time and connection visible. First it creates a reason to reconnect; later, who holds it reflects whether the couple is close or separated. That reading comes from the object’s reported use in the story, not from a confirmed explanation by the filmmakers.

Was the watch paid product placement?
Not according to Neasi and TAG Heuer, GQ reported. The distinction matters because the film also includes a fictional TAG Heuer campaign within its story; that on-screen plot point is separate from the reported arrangement for using the Carrera prop.

Neasi described the Carrera as “the third character in the film,” telling GQ that its role grew beyond what the production initially expected. The phrase captures how consistently the watch participates in the couple’s story, rather than establishing a hidden history for the object.

The reported material does not establish that the watch is a family heirloom, a personal gift, or marked with a hidden engraving. Its significance is grounded in its visible role: Hayes leaves it behind, and its changing possession tracks the relationship’s shifts.
