Guy Fawkes Night falls on 5 November, but the Irish bonfire traditions documented by the National Museum of Ireland are more closely associated with Halloween, St John’s Eve and, in some regions, May Eve. That helps explain why 5 November is not the main date in Ireland’s traditional bonfire calendar. The available sources do not measure how many people in the Republic celebrate Guy Fawkes Night today, or establish one historical reason for its limited prominence.
What is Guy Fawkes Night?
Guy Fawkes Night, also called Bonfire Night, is a 5 November commemoration associated with the failed Gunpowder Plot of 1605. The question for Ireland is not whether bonfires exist in its traditions, but which dates and customs the sources identify as culturally significant.
Which dates anchor Irish seasonal celebrations?
| Date or occasion | Irish calendar context | What the sources say about fires or celebration |
|---|---|---|
| 31 October: Halloween / Oíche Shamhna | The eve of Samhain, when much of the traditional celebration took place. | The National Museum of Ireland describes feasting, games, masks and disguises, protective practices and bonfires. National Museum of Ireland |
| 1 November: Samhain | The National Museum identifies Samhain as the first day of winter. | It forms the seasonal context for Halloween customs. National Museum of Ireland |
| St John’s Eve | A separate seasonal observance with particular regional significance. | The Museum says it was the most celebrated bonfire night in the west; Halloween was the fire night elsewhere. National Museum of Ireland |
| May Eve / Bealtaine customs | May Eve customs had a different regional footprint from Halloween and St John’s Eve. | The Museum’s account shows that bonfire traditions varied by place and season, rather than following one uniform Irish pattern. National Museum of Ireland |
The Government of Ireland’s tourism page offers a contemporary orientation: it describes Halloween as 31 October and Samhain as beginning on 1 November. The National Museum’s folklife accounts provide the detail on customs and regional bonfire practices. Government of Ireland
Why is Guy Fawkes Night not the main Irish bonfire date?
The documented calendar offers a grounded explanation: Irish seasonal fires and communal customs are associated with dates other than 5 November. Halloween and Samhain have a substantial place in the Museum’s account, while St John’s Eve and May Eve traditions show that bonfire observances also differed across regions.

This is a comparison of traditions, not proof of a single cause. The cited sources do not establish that Ireland rejected Guy Fawkes Night for a particular political or historical reason, nor do they quantify its present-day observance across the Republic of Ireland. It is more precise to say that the Irish bonfire customs described in these sources are tied more visibly to other seasonal dates.
Halloween remains a living tradition
In a 2023 National Museum of Ireland article, Clodagh Doyle, Keeper of the National Folklife Collection, said: “Halloween is one of the few festivals of the calendar year that is still practiced in much the same way as it was for generations.” The Museum’s descriptions of masks and disguises, games, feasting and bonfires show the range of customs associated with the occasion.
