Why Griselda Blanco’s Son Sued Netflix and Sofía Vergara Over ‘Griselda’

Michael Corleone Blanco and Marie Ramírez sued Netflix, Sofía Vergara and producers before Griselda premiered, alleging unauthorized use of family identity and material. The complaint was later dismissed with prejudice after an out-of-court resolution, but settlement terms were not reported.

In January 2024, Griselda Blanco’s son, Michael Corleone Blanco, and his wife, Marie Ramírez, sued Netflix, Sofía Vergara and producers over the planned release of Griselda. They alleged that the series used family identity and material shared during earlier discussions without authorization, credit or compensation. The case later ended in an out-of-court agreement and dismissal with prejudice, but reports did not disclose the settlement terms.

What did Michael Corleone Blanco allege?

Blanco and Ramírez filed their lawsuit in Miami-Dade County in January 2024, before Griselda premiered. As reported by Univision, they alleged unauthorized use of image, likeness or identity and sought to stop the planned six-episode series from being released.

The complaint also reportedly argued that Blanco had shared interview recordings and other material during earlier discussions about a book and a program, and that the series used his narrative without credit or compensation. These are claims made by the plaintiffs; the reports do not establish that the material was used as alleged or that the claims were proven in court.

Identity and likeness claims

The plaintiffs’ position, as described in news coverage, was that they had not authorized the use of family identity in the production. Their requested injunction would have halted the series’ release. That request was part of the lawsuit, not a court ruling that Netflix had infringed anyone’s rights.

Alleged use of shared material

The plaintiffs also connected the dispute to earlier development discussions and material they said Blanco had provided. In its report on the case, El Universo described Netflix’s initial characterization of the proposal as fiction rather than a documentary, with no intent to depict events exactly as they happened. That account is a reported position, not a judicial finding about the series’ sources or the parties’ discussions.

What happened after the lawsuit was filed?

Netflix sought to move the case to federal court, according to Bloomberg Law’s January 22, 2024 report. That procedural request did not resolve whether the plaintiffs’ allegations were valid.

Univision later reported that the matter was resolved out of court and the complaint was dismissed with prejudice. The reporting reviewed did not disclose the agreement’s terms. There is therefore no substantiated public figure for a payment, or confirmation of any particular concession by Netflix, Vergara or the producers.

Was the lawsuit decided on its merits?

The available reporting describes an out-of-court resolution and dismissal with prejudice, not a decision after trial on whether the series unlawfully used anyone’s identity or material. A dismissal with prejudice ends the complaint and generally prevents the same claim from being brought again, but it does not, by itself, establish which side’s factual account was correct.

What is Netflix’s Griselda series?

Netflix describes Griselda as a six-episode fictional dramatization inspired by real events. The company says the creators condensed timelines and combined moments. Its Tudum feature includes co-creator Doug Miro’s description of the fictional character’s violence as “a building of her hubris and her sense of power.” That is the creator’s characterization of the series, not an independent historical finding.

The series streams on Netflix. Its fictionalized format is relevant context for the dispute, but it does not alone determine the legal questions raised in the complaint.
