The comics connection is real, but the route to the name is different. The show turns a surname associated with comics Sofia into a deliberate rejection of her father Carmine’s legacy.
What name does Sofia take in The Penguin?
After the Falcone family’s collapse, Sofia announces: “From this point on, I am a Gigante — and this is a new Family now.” In the series, Gigante is her late mother Isabella’s maiden name. Her declaration is not simply a change of label: it marks Sofia’s intention to define her own family and inheritance.
Executive producer Matt Reeves described Sofia’s choice as an effort to claim the part of her past that rejects her father’s “dark patriarchy.” Showrunner Lauren LeFranc called it “Sofia’s moment of taking back power and declaring herself to the world.” Cristin Milioti likewise described the choice as honoring Sofia’s mother and establishing a matriarchal mob family. ComicBook.com reported the dialogue and the creators’ explanations on October 21, 2024.
How does the name connect to the comics?
In the comics, Sofia is known as Sofia Falcone-Gigante. The shared Gigante name is the nod; the show changes how she acquires it. According to LeFranc’s account of the comics, Sofia marries into the Gigante family. In the television series, she takes Gigante from her mother instead.

| Continuity | How Sofia gets the Gigante name | Role highlighted in the cited coverage |
|---|---|---|
| The comics | She marries into the Gigante family, according to LeFranc’s account. | Sofia is known as the Hangman, a killer who dies fighting Harvey Dent, according to Den of Geek’s October 22, 2024 interview. |
| The Penguin | She adopts her late mother Isabella’s maiden name. | She becomes a power-seeking figure in Gotham’s underworld and declares a new family. |
ComicBook.com notes that Sofia Falcone-Gigante debuted in Batman: The Long Halloween #6 in 1997. That history supplies context, not a plot blueprint: the show reworks her role and makes the surname a choice tied to her mother and her break with Carmine’s legacy.
Why does the series change Sofia’s story?
The change gives Sofia authorship over what the name means. Rather than inheriting a connection to the Gigantes through marriage, she makes her mother’s name the foundation of a new identity. LeFranc said Reeves gave her room to create new canon, and her adaptation turns the comics character into a central force in the television story.
LeFranc has also discussed the series’ interest in how women have historically been labeled “crazy” or “hysterical,” including the institutionalization of women. She cited Rosemary Kennedy as an inspiration for that theme, not as a source for Sofia’s fictional biography. At New York Comic Con, LeFranc also spoke about wanting more complex women and girls in the Batman canon, so audiences would have more characters to identify with. Den of Geek’s interview and Popverse’s October 27, 2024 coverage describe those creative aims.
Does Sofia’s new identity let her escape her past?
No. The surname marks a bid for agency, but it does not give Sofia a clean escape from the consequences of her conflict with Oz. In the season-one finale, she is sent back to Arkham. LeFranc said she wanted Sofia to have “a fate worse than death,” meaning a return there. In a separate interview, Milioti described the ending as a glimmer of hope within a very long, dark stretch; TheWrap’s account says Sofia had come close to beating Oz and getting out of Gotham. The A.V. Club interview also notes that her fixation on revenge helped keep her from escaping. TheWrap’s November 14, 2024 interview and The A.V. Club’s interview with LeFranc discuss the outcome.

Where to start with the comics
Batman: The Long Halloween is the comic identified in ComicBook.com’s reporting as the source of Sofia Falcone-Gigante’s debut. It can provide background on the comics character, but it is not required to understand why the television Sofia chooses her mother’s surname. The series’ new meaning for Gigante stands on its own.
