Spoilers for the ending of Wicked: For Good and the Broadway musical. Glinda ends the film with public authority and a chance to change Oz—but she believes Elphaba is dead. The audience sees that Elphaba survived, which makes Glinda’s apparent victory feel less like a happy ending than the start of a lonely, uncertain responsibility.
How does Wicked: For Good end?
Glinda learns that Madame Morrible helped cause Nessarose’s death and recognizes that she played a part in turning Oz against Elphaba. When Elphaba appears to melt, Glinda returns to the Emerald City carrying the green elixir bottle. She confronts the Wizard, has Morrible imprisoned and takes on the work of leading Oz.

Her first public steps point toward reform. She tells the Munchkins that Oz’s fear should end and welcomes persecuted animals back. Peacock’s official account describes this changed address as a central part of the ending: Peacock’s ending explainer.
But Glinda believes Elphaba is gone. The film then shows the audience what Glinda does not know: Elphaba escaped through a trapdoor, and Fiyero, now the Scarecrow, reunites with her. The two leave Oz. Glinda is left to grieve a friend she thinks she has lost, while viewers know Elphaba is alive.

Does Glinda know Elphaba survived?
The film does not show Glinda learning that Elphaba escaped. She appears to believe Elphaba is dead, and the ending offers no confirmed reunion or message that would establish Glinda’s knowledge.
That difference in what Glinda and the audience know is crucial to the ending’s sadness. Elphaba and Fiyero have a future beyond Oz; Glinda, as far as the film shows, has to continue without knowing that her friend survived.

What does the final Grimmerie scene mean?
The Grimmerie’s pages flutter after Elphaba sends magic from beyond Oz. One reading is that the movement signals Elphaba’s distant magic and leaves open the possibility of a connection to Glinda. Another is that the book responds to Glinda beginning to access real magic as she grows into her role.
The moment supports both interpretations; it does not prove that Glinda knows Elphaba is alive. As TIME’s account of the ending notes, the book’s movement can be read in more than one way. The film ends with a possibility, not a promise of reconciliation.

Why Glinda’s apparent victory is so costly
Glinda gains a public role and a moral direction, but she does so after recognizing her complicity in the story that made Elphaba a target. Welcoming the animals back and challenging the Wizard’s rule are meaningful acts; they cannot undo the loss Glinda believes she has suffered.
Director Jon M. Chu described the intended uncertainty in an interview with The Washington Post: “He wasn’t looking for a happy ending, necessarily, but for the question of ‘Who will Glinda become?’ to linger in the air.” He also connected the sequel to adult friendships that can be changed or ended by distance, hardship and diverging beliefs. The question is not only whether Glinda can lead Oz, but what kind of person she will become while living with the choices that helped separate her from Elphaba. The Washington Post interview was published November 25, 2025.

Producer Marc Platt framed the two-part story as a transformation for both women: “The first tells how Elphaba becomes the Wicked Witch of the West, and the second tells how her best friend, Glinda, becomes authentically good.” That description appears in NBCUniversal’s backgrounder, published November 12, 2025. The film’s ending shows Glinda beginning that change, not completing it.

The film follows the musical’s broad trajectory but adds material and changes what the audience sees. The contrast is not that the film reunites the women: it does not. Instead, it gives the ending a more visible public act of reform and a final, ambiguous image of magic.

| Final signal | The Grimmerie’s pages flutter, leaving the source and meaning of the magic open. | TIME describes the stage ending as more closed; a comparable final signal is not stated. |
| Glinda’s future | Her leadership begins, but the film leaves who she will become unresolved. | TIME says Glinda faces her complicity; a comparable resolution of her future is not stated. |
TIME’s comparison characterizes the stage ending as leaving Glinda to believe the two people closest to her are dead and to face her own complicity. The film adds the animal-welcoming scene, shows Elphaba and Fiyero’s escape to the audience, and ends on the fluttering Grimmerie. Those additions soften the sense of finality without removing the separation between Glinda and Elphaba.
