When did Glenn Frey die, and what was the cause?
The Eagles announced Frey’s death in an official memorial, writing: “It is with the heaviest of hearts that we announce the passing of husband, best friend, father, comrade, and Eagles founder, Glenn Frey, in New York City on Monday, January 18th, 2016.” The band attributed his death to complications of rheumatoid arthritis, acute ulcerative colitis, and pneumonia. That is the cause-of-death wording in the Eagles’ statement; it does not establish a more detailed medical sequence. Eagles official memorial

Frey’s role in the Eagles
Frey was a co-founder of the Eagles, as well as a guitarist, singer, and songwriter. His work helped shape the group’s sound and repertoire, and his collaboration with fellow Eagle Don Henley became one of the band’s defining songwriting partnerships. The Washington Post described Frey and Henley as a songwriting partnership; the Recording Academy identifies Frey as a principal songwriter on several of the group’s best-known songs. Songs that carry his legacy
The Recording Academy credits Frey as a principal songwriter on “Best Of My Love,” “One Of These Nights,” “Take It To The Limit,” and “Hotel California.” Those credits put his contribution in clear view: he was not only a performer at the center of the Eagles, but also a writer behind songs that became central to the group’s identity. Recognition and remembrance
The Recording Academy described Frey as a six-time GRAMMY winner. In its obituary published in 2016, The Guardian reported that the Eagles’ Greatest Hits album had been certified platinum 29 times. That figure reflects the Guardian’s historical report in 2016, rather than a newly checked certification status. Recording Academy memorial · The Guardian, January 18, 2016
The Eagles’ announcement closed with a measure of what Frey meant to the band and its listeners: “Words can neither describe our sorrow, nor our love and respect for all that he has given to us, his family, the music community & millions of fans worldwide.” Eagles official memorial
