Fans suspected Taylor Swift was behind Argylle because the film’s marketing seemed to echo details associated with her: argyle patterns, a redheaded writer, and a Scottish Fold cat pictured in a backpack. Those similarities sparked a theory, not proof. Director Matthew Vaughn said Swift did not write the novel; he described the cat as the only connection, an indirect one involving his daughters’ response to Swift’s documentary Miss Americana.

Why did fans connect Taylor Swift to Argylle?

The theory took shape from several details that fans read together as clues. The Washington Post reported that Swift owns Scottish Fold cats, while Argylle promotional imagery showed a cat peering out of a backpack carrier. Swift’s short film All Too Well features a redheaded writer, and fans also pointed to the name Elly Conway and the film’s argyle patterns as potentially Swift-coded references.

These were perceived similarities, not independent evidence of authorship. Before the novel was available to readers, fans also combed an Instagram account associated with Elly Conway for possible connections between its captions, Swift’s lyrics, and her public image. That activity shows how social-media speculation can turn scattered details into a coherent fan theory; it does not establish that Swift wrote the book or planted clues.

Did Taylor Swift write the Argylle novel?

No, according to director Matthew Vaughn. In a February 2024 interview with Rolling Stone, he said: “There is a real book, and it’s a really good book, and there is an Elly Conway who wrote the book, but it’s not Taylor Swift.” He also said, “As crazy as that sounds, that is our only Taylor Swift connection.” These are Vaughn’s statements, not an official statement from Swift.

The novel was published under the name Elly Conway. The Washington Post investigated how the book came to be and reported that Royal Astronomical Society deputy executive director Robert Massey recalled receiving a 2022 inquiry from Tammy Cohen, who identified herself as a novelist writing a contracted spy thriller for Penguin Random House. That reported correspondence is part of the Post’s account; it should not be stretched into a claim about an author’s identity beyond what the reporting establishes. The Associated Press also reported that Swift had no involvement in the film.

What does Taylor Swift have to do with the cat in the film?

Vaughn described a family connection that helps explain why the cat imagery caught fans’ attention. His daughters watched Miss Americana and persuaded Claudia Schiffer to get them a Scottish Fold kitten for Christmas. The cat, Chip, later appeared in Argylle after an actor-cat did not work out during filming, Vaughn told Rolling Stone.

So Swift’s documentary indirectly influenced the family’s decision to get the breed of cat used in the movie. That anecdote explains a real connection behind one of the theory’s most noticeable clues, but it does not support the claim that Swift wrote the novel.
