Yes, Facebook can still ask you to say “Happy birthday” to someone who has died. Meta says that should normally stop after it learns of the death and properly memorializes or removes the account. The prompt usually means the death has not been reported or processed, Facebook matched the wrong profile, or a reminder was generated before the account status changed. It can also be a notification failure.
There are two separate fixes: report the profile through Facebook’s official deceased-account process, and turn off birthday notifications on your own account while Facebook corrects the profile.
Why the reminder appears
A standard birthday reminder is generated from the birth date on an ordinary Facebook profile. Facebook’s stated policy is different for a person it knows has died: Meta says it uses automated systems to reduce appearances in birthday reminders, event invitations and friend suggestions, and says friends should no longer be recommended to wish a memorialized account a happy birthday. That policy does not guarantee instant or perfect suppression. Possible explanations for a particular prompt include:

- The family has not reported the death.
- Facebook has received a report but has not processed it.
- The notification was created before memorialization and remained in a queue or cache.
- The wrong profile, a duplicate profile, an additional profile or a Page was associated with the report.
- Facebook incorrectly classified the account or failed to withdraw the reminder.
Meta does not publish notification metadata that would identify which explanation applies to an individual account. A birthday prompt therefore does not prove that the family failed to act or that Facebook is deliberately ignoring the death.
First check which profile the reminder identifies
Open the reminder without posting or interacting with it. Confirm the person’s name, profile photo, past posts and other identifying details. People with common names can be confused with another living user, and a reminder can point to a different profile than the one the family reported.
If it is the wrong person, do not submit that profile as deceased. Use Facebook’s reporting or feedback tools for the incorrect suggestion instead.

Report the account for memorialization or removal
Use Facebook’s official deceased-person account form. Friends and relatives with appropriate documentation can request either memorialization or deletion. Facebook may ask for documentation; submit it only through the official Facebook form.

- Open the deceased-person reporting page.
- Enter the requested details and the exact profile URL.
- Provide valid documentation if Facebook requests it.
- Choose memorialization if the family wants a shared place for memories, or request removal if the account should be deleted.
Facebook will not provide another person’s login information, including after death. Do not log into the account using a known password. Facebook’s policy treats that as unauthorized access.
What memorialization changes
Meta describes a memorialized account as a place where friends and family can gather and share memories. A memorialized profile normally shows an indication such as “Remembering,” remains visible according to its existing privacy settings, and keeps existing posts, photos and other content. Memorialization prevents anyone from logging into the account; it does not transfer the account to the family. Details are in Facebook’s memorialized-account guidance.

A designated legacy contact has limited administrative powers. Depending on the account’s settings, that person may pin a post, update the profile or cover photo and respond to new friend requests. A legacy contact cannot log in, read private messages, remove friends or edit old posts. See Facebook’s legacy-contact documentation.
Stop birthday notifications on your own account
Disabling your notifications does not fix the deceased person’s account; it only prevents your account from alerting you. Facebook’s general route is:

- Choose Settings & privacy, then Settings.
- Select Notifications.
- Open the birthday-related category and turn off the delivery methods you do not want.
Menu names differ among the desktop site, Android, iPhone/iPad, mobile browser and Facebook Lite. Facebook’s notification settings instructions describe the available controls. For a complete stop, check each channel:

- Facebook notifications shown inside the app or website.
- Push notifications delivered when Facebook is closed.
- Email notifications.
- Text-message notifications, if enabled.
Meta distinguishes in-app notifications from push notifications. Turning off phone alerts can remove lock-screen prompts while leaving a birthday item visible inside Facebook. Its push-notification help page explains that distinction.
iPhone or iPad fallback
- Open the device’s Settings.
- Tap Notifications, then Facebook.
- Turn off Allow Notifications.
Android fallback
- Open Settings.
- Open Apps or Apps & notifications.
- Select Facebook, then Notifications.
- Turn off Facebook notifications or the relevant category.
These device controls suppress alerts but do not memorialize or delete a profile.

A continuing birthday prompt for a memorialized account conflicts with Meta’s stated design, which says friends should not be recommended to send birthday wishes. Treat it as a possible product or account-status failure, not as evidence that the family did anything wrong.

- Verify that the reminder links to the profile displaying “Remembering.”
- Take a screenshot showing the profile name, reminder text and date.
- Report the problem through Facebook’s Help Center and attach the screenshot if the form allows it.
- Disable birthday or push notifications on your own account while waiting.
Facebook does not promise a particular response time, and its public pages do not expose a status page for an individual reminder.
Memorialization or deletion?
Facebook provides separate choices through its memorialization and removal guidance. The appropriate choice depends on the person’s wishes, family preferences, privacy concerns and any legal obligations.

Turning off birthday alerts, blocking or unfriending the profile can reduce immediate distress, but none of those actions changes the account’s status. Removal is more final; memorialization preserves access to public or previously shared memories under the existing privacy rules.
What not to do
- Do not log into the deceased person’s account, even if you know the password.
- Do not pay an unofficial “Facebook recovery” or deletion service.
- Do not send a death certificate, identity document or login code to someone who contacts you through Messenger claiming to work for Meta.
- Do not assume the first search result is the correct person.
- If the profile appears hacked, do not follow suspicious links or send money. Report the compromised account through Facebook’s official channels and warn relatives.
A practical checklist
- Open the reminder and verify the exact profile.
- Screenshot the prompt and its date.
- Submit the official deceased-person form for memorialization or removal.
- Do not attempt to access the account directly.
- Turn off birthday, push, email or text notifications on your own account as needed.
- If the profile already says “Remembering,” report the continuing reminder as a notification failure.
Changing the birthday visibility of the deceased person is not a safe workaround. Facebook’s birthday-visibility setting concerns the profile owner’s own birth date and is not a substitute for memorialization or removal. See Facebook’s birthday-visibility explanation.
