Eva Green said she dreads first days on a film set: actors have to concentrate among an unfamiliar crew while worrying about whether they will be fired. On The Three Musketeers: Milady, that anxiety met a particularly difficult first scene for her: Milady’s confrontation with Athos, played by Vincent Cassel. Green said already knowing Cassel helped her through it.
Why Green found first days stressful
In a Collider interview republished by Filmibee on May 9, 2024, Green described the pressure of arriving on a new set. “On the first day of shooting, any actor is very, very nervous,” she said. She also put the worry plainly: “We’re all scared of getting fired, and it’s very hard to be focused-focused.” The fear she described was a general feeling actors may have on a first day, not a report that she was actually at risk of losing the role.
Green also pointed to the unfamiliar people around her: “There’s a different crew that you don’t know.” Her conclusion was blunt: “I hate first days.” In a December 11, 2023 interview with Vogue France, she likewise said, in French, that during the first days of a shoot she is always gripped by stress.
Her first scene was Milady’s confrontation with Athos
Green’s first scene on the film was Milady’s painful confrontation with Athos, played by Vincent Cassel. Vogue France also identified it as the first scene she shot. That establishes it as Green’s first scene, not as the first scene filmed for the production as a whole.

She said she had worked with Cassel a few months earlier and already knew him. Relying on that familiarity and his energy helped her face the scene. The combination of a new set and an emotionally difficult opening scene helps explain why the start felt daunting without suggesting that Green doubted her ability to play Milady.
Why Milady’s story drew Green to the film
The Three Musketeers: Milady is the second part of Martin Bourboulon’s adaptation of Alexandre Dumas’s novel. France’s CNC lists its French theatrical release as December 13, 2023. Where The Three Musketeers: D’Artagnan follows the title character’s journey, the second film gives more attention to Milady’s history and emotional life.

Green said the addition of motherhood—and Milady’s child as her “secret wound”—was what made her decide to join the project. She also described Milady’s connection with D’Artagnan as ambiguous: she enjoys him and may be touched by his innocence, but suppresses those feelings. Those vulnerabilities broaden the character beyond her role as an adversary.

Green said she performed the full climactic sword fight herself after several weeks of training. This is her account of the work, rather than independently verified stunt documentation. It offers further context for her preparation, but her comments about first-day nerves remain the clearest explanation of why stepping onto the set initially felt difficult.
