Emmy Russell said she went barefoot on American Idol because the white boots she had worn the night before felt uncomfortable and unlike her. She and people around her decided to strip the styling back so she could “just be Emmy,” and Russell said she felt she sang better.
What prompted Emmy Russell to go barefoot?
After her performance, Russell explained in an interview with People that she had felt uncomfortable in her “little white boots” the previous night. She said some of the cast suggested stripping her look back, and she agreed because she did not feel like herself in the boots.

“I think that was the best thing I could have possibly done,” Russell said of going barefoot. She added that she felt she sang better. Her explanation was about comfort and feeling like herself; the available reports do not establish a broader reason for the choice.
What did she sing, and when?
Russell performed her original song “Skinny” barefoot during the Season 22 Top 14 reveal episode, which aired April 15, 2024. She had also performed the song during her audition. Yahoo Entertainment’s report of the People interview and USA TODAY’s episode recap both describe the performance.

USA TODAY also quoted Russell saying, “I just feel like I’m who God made me to be when I sing that song.” That remark was about singing “Skinny”; her specific explanation for leaving off the boots was that they were uncomfortable and she wanted to feel like herself.
