The familiar show was not fully formed at its debut. Its original cast and live format were in place, but its voice developed through the first season.
What was the first Saturday Night Live episode like?
The premiere aired live from Studio 8H on October 11, 1975. George Carlin hosted, and Billy Preston and Janis Ian performed as musical guests. The episode established a basic framework—guest host, comedy, and live music—without yet representing every convention viewers would come to associate with the series.
At the time, NBC called the program Saturday Night. It took the name Saturday Night Live in 1977, after a naming conflict with ABC’s Saturday Night Live with Howard Cosell was resolved.
Who was in the original SNL cast?
The original performers were Chevy Chase, John Belushi, Dan Aykroyd, Gilda Radner, Garrett Morris, Jane Curtin, and Laraine Newman. They were later branded the Not Ready for Prime Time Players. Lorne Michaels produced the show from 1975 to 1980.

The premiere’s cast and production team were building a live series, not simply repeating a finished formula. That distinction matters: the show’s enduring identity emerged over time rather than arriving fully formed in its first broadcast.
How did SNL find its format?
Anne Beatts, an original writer and Emmy winner, later described the first season as a period of development. As she told TIME: “I don’t think the show was what it became until probably Christmas of that year.” Her recollection points to an organic evolution, not a single documented moment when the format suddenly changed.

The premiere provided a starting structure: a live late-night show with a host and musical act. The early episodes then helped establish the program’s voice and recurring approach. The evidence supports that gradual account; it does not establish that every familiar element was already fixed on October 11.
