Elton John briefly left the stage during a Las Vegas performance on March 1, 2018, after a fan repeatedly touched his piano keys despite being asked to stop and then reached over the piano to take pictures, according to John’s account. He returned after the man was removed and ended the audience invitation for the song.
What happened during the performance?
John was performing “Saturday Night’s Alright for Fighting” at his Las Vegas residency at Caesars Palace. He had invited audience members around the piano, which he described as a regular part of the show. In a statement published by Entertainment Tonight, John said one man put his hands on the piano keys and continued after John asked him to stop. The man then reached over the piano to try to take pictures.

John left the stage until the man had been removed. He returned and announced that there would be no more audience members onstage during “Saturday Night,” according to The Guardian. Reports describe a brief walk-off, not John abandoning the concert.
What did Elton John say about leaving?
In a statement to Entertainment Tonight published March 3, 2018, John explained: “This guy was rude, disruptive and had no care or respect for our show and so I let him know how I felt, then left the stage until they had removed him.” That was John’s explanation of why he walked off.

Why do some accounts mention high-fives?
A separate account from an audience member, reported by TheWrap, said the fan repeatedly tried to high-five John. That is an eyewitness detail, distinct from John’s statement about the piano keys and attempted photographs; it should not be treated as a replacement for his account.

The reported change was specific to audience participation during “Saturday Night” at that performance: after returning, John said audience members would no longer come onstage for that song. The 2018 reports do not establish a current venue procedure or a lasting policy for later performances.
