Donald Trump’s lawsuit accuses the BBC of defamation and violating Florida’s consumer-protection law over a Panorama documentary edit of his January 6, 2021 speech. The BBC apologized for an editing error but disputes that the edit gives Trump a viable claim. The case remains unresolved on the merits in the latest court records described here.
What did the BBC edit, and why is Trump suing?
The dispute concerns a segment in the BBC Panorama documentary Trump: A Second Chance?, broadcast in the UK on October 28, 2024. Trump’s complaint alleges that the program joined remarks from separate parts of his January 6, 2021 speech, creating the false impression that he fomented violence.
That is Trump’s allegation, not a court finding. His complaint, filed December 15, 2025, in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida, asserts two claims: defamation and a violation of the Florida Deceptive and Unfair Trade Practices Act (FDUTPA). The complaint seeks at least $5 billion on each count, plus other relief. Those sums are demands in the pleading; no damages have been awarded in the court records described here. BBC News explains why Trump says he is suing.
What has the BBC said?
The BBC apologized for what it called an editing error. In a statement quoted in its court motion, the BBC said the edit “unintentionally” gave “the mistaken impression that President Trump had made a direct call for violent action” through an “error of judgement.” The broadcaster nevertheless said it disagreed that Trump had a viable defamation claim. BBC News summarizes the lawsuit and the broadcaster’s response.

In a motion to dismiss filed March 16, 2026, the BBC argued that the Florida court lacked personal jurisdiction and that Trump’s complaint failed to state viable claims. It also contended that the documentary was produced and broadcast in the UK, not Florida. These are arguments advanced by the BBC, not findings by the court.
What is the case about legally?
The case puts the parties’ competing accounts of the edit alongside questions about the court’s authority and the claims pleaded under Florida law. Trump alleges that the edit conveyed a defamatory meaning and amounted to an unfair or deceptive trade practice. The BBC contests the claims and argues, among other things, that the documentary was not distributed in Florida.

What has the court decided, and what happens next?
The latest case-specific court record described here is an August 6, 2026 omnibus order by Magistrate Judge Enjoliqué A. Lett. It denied without prejudice several discovery motions and directed the parties to confer about the remaining discovery disputes. The order did not decide the BBC’s motion to dismiss, whether the edit was defamatory, or whether the BBC violated FDUTPA. It is a procedural ruling, not a decision on the merits.
BBC News reported on July 17, 2026, that a February 2027 trial date had been scheduled if the case progressed. The court record described above is later, but the current status of that schedule after August 6, 2026, is not established here. The case’s merits therefore remain unresolved in the records cited.
