In 101, the zero says that the tens position is present but empty: the first 1 is one hundred and the last 1 is one one. Remove that zero and the numeral becomes 11, which means eleven rather than one hundred one.
Zero also names the quantity “none.” That meaning is related to, but different from, zero’s job as a placeholder inside a numeral. Understanding both roles explains how we write numbers, compare their sizes, and carry out whole-number and decimal calculations.
Why does zero matter in place-value notation?
Decimal notation is positional. A digit does not have one fixed value; its value depends on the place it occupies. From right to left, the places are ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, and higher powers of ten. A numeral records how many units of each size are present.
For example, 583 means five hundreds, eight tens, and three ones:

583 = (5 × 100) + (8 × 10) + (3 × 1)
When a place contains no units, the numeral still has to show that the place exists. The digit 0 performs that job. It contributes zero of that place’s unit while keeping the positions on either side correctly separated.
How place value gives every digit its meaning
In base ten, each move one place to the left multiplies a place’s value by ten. The general form of a four-digit numeral is:
(thousands digit × 1,000) + (hundreds digit × 100) + (tens digit × 10) + (ones digit × 1)
| Place | Power of ten | What one unit in that place represents |
|---|---|---|
| Ones | 100 | 1 |
| Tens | 101 | 10 |
| Hundreds | 102 | 100 |
| Thousands | 103 | 1,000 |
The same digit can therefore represent very different quantities. In 4, it means four ones; in 40, it means four tens, or forty; in 400, it means four hundreds.

The numeral 101 has three positions:
- The left-hand 1 is in the hundreds place, so it represents 100.
- The 0 is in the tens place, so it represents zero tens.
- The right-hand 1 is in the ones place, so it represents 1.
Its expanded form is:
101 = (1 × 100) + (0 × 10) + (1 × 1) = 100 + 0 + 1
The zero does not erase the tens position. It explicitly records that the tens contribution is empty, allowing the final 1 to remain in the ones place. Without the zero, 11 has only two positions: one ten and one one.

Why 11, 101, and 1001 are different numbers
These numerals use the digit 1 repeatedly, but their zeros preserve different empty positions.
| Numeral | Expanded form | Meaning in words |
|---|---|---|
| 11 | (1 × 10) + (1 × 1) |
One ten and one one; eleven |
| 101 | (1 × 100) + (0 × 10) + (1 × 1) |
One hundred, no tens, and one one; one hundred one |
| 1001 | (1 × 1,000) + (0 × 100) + (0 × 10) + (1 × 1) |
One thousand, no hundreds, no tens, and one one; one thousand one |
Reading the same symbols without their positions would lose the distinction. The zeros are structural information: they tell you how far apart the nonzero digits are.
Zero as a quantity versus zero as a placeholder
Zero as a number
As a number, zero describes a quantity of none. If a box contains no apples, its count is zero. Zero can be added to another number without changing that number, and it lies between negative and positive numbers on the number line.
Zero as a placeholder digit
As a placeholder, zero appears inside a positional numeral to show that a particular place contributes none of its units. In 2,005, the two zeros indicate zero hundreds and zero tens; the 5 remains in the ones place.
These roles can occur together but should not be confused. The zero in 101 has the numerical value zero in the tens column, while its placement also preserves the hundreds and ones columns. A standalone 0 expresses the quantity none; an internal zero helps encode the positions of other digits.
Why a blank space cannot replace zero
A blank between digits would be ambiguous. If someone wrote 1 1, you would not know whether the space represented a missing tens place, a separator, a printing error, or two separate numbers. The digit 0 makes the empty place explicit and reproducible.

This explicit marker is especially important when numerals are copied, spoken, calculated, or stored electronically. 1001 and 101 contain different numbers of places, even though both have a 1 at each end. Zero records exactly which intermediate places are present and empty.
How zero supports calculation
Aligning columns for addition and subtraction
Written algorithms line up ones under ones, tens under tens, hundreds under hundreds, and so on. Zeros make an absent place visible during that alignment. For example, writing 407 as four hundreds, zero tens, and seven ones prevents the 7 from being mistaken for a tens digit when it is combined with another number.
Multiplication and division
Multiplication by a power of ten shifts digits into higher places: multiplying by 10 moves each digit one place left, and multiplying by 100 moves it two places left. The resulting zeros show the vacated lower places in whole-number notation. Place-value understanding also explains why long multiplication and division keep columns aligned rather than treating a numeral as an unordered string of digits.
Decimals
The same positional idea continues to the right of the decimal point. Tenths, hundredths, and thousandths represent powers of ten less than one. In 3.04, the 0 marks zero tenths while the 4 occupies the hundredths place:
3.04 = 3 + (0 × 0.1) + (4 × 0.01)
Without the zero, 3.4 would mean three and four tenths, a different value. The nested structure of place value is therefore needed for operating on both whole numbers and decimals, as emphasized in curriculum guidance from New Zealand’s Ministry of Education.
Zeros at the beginning, middle, and end
Leading zeros
A zero before the first nonzero digit usually does not change a number’s value: 007 and 7 both represent seven in ordinary decimal notation. The leading zeros can still be useful when a fixed width is required, such as a three-digit code or a column of equally wide measurements. In those contexts they show formatting or a required number of positions rather than extra quantity.

Interior zeros
A zero between nonzero digits is normally essential to the value. 1,005 is one thousand five, whereas 105 is one hundred five. Removing an interior zero changes the place occupied by every digit to its right.
Trailing zeros in whole numbers and decimals
Zeros at the end of a whole number can be significant because they place earlier digits in higher positions: 50 is five tens, not five ones. In a decimal fraction, trailing zeros can leave the value unchanged—2.50 and 2.5 are equal—but they may communicate precision or a chosen format. Their interpretation depends on whether they are being used to encode a place, report measurement precision, or satisfy a fixed-width format.
Does this idea work outside base ten?
Yes. The placeholder principle belongs to positional notation generally, not only to decimal notation. In a base-
b system, each position represents a power of b, and zero marks a position containing none of that base’s units. The names of the places and the symbols for other digits change, but an empty position still needs an explicit marker.
Binary notation is a familiar example. In 1001 base two, the zeros mark empty twos and fours places, while the two 1s occupy the eights and ones places. Its value is 8 + 1 = 9 in decimal. The same visual pattern as decimal 1001 does not imply the same value because the base determines each position’s weight.
Why zero was a major development in writing numbers
The historical development of zero involved related but distinct ideas: indicating an empty position in a positional system and treating zero as a number in its own right. Historical accounts caution against assigning the entire development to one inventor or one isolated moment.
A separate symbol for an empty place made positional notation more reliable and compact. The National Academies’ Adding It Up: Helping Children Learn Mathematics describes the use of a separate zero symbol as a crucial step in the development of place-value notation. The Mathematical Association of America’s discussion of zero likewise examines placeholder uses in ancient positional systems, while the University of St Andrews’ MacTutor history distinguishes the placeholder role from zero’s role as a number.

Oxford University Press’s chapter abstract “Zero: Place-holder and peculiar number,” published in 2020, summarizes the placeholder function plainly: “The 0 tells us, simply, that the position is ‘empty.’” That concise statement captures the practical reason a zero appears between other digits.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
“Zero means there is nothing, so it can be ignored.”
Zero contributes no units in its own place, but the place itself cannot be ignored. Ignoring the zero in 1,006 would move the 6 from the ones place to the tens or hundreds place and change the number.
“A digit always has the same value.”
The symbol 5 means five ones in 5, five tens in 50, and five hundreds in 500. Ask which power-of-ten column contains the digit before assigning its value.
“More digits always means a larger number.”
Leading zeros do not increase value: 0009 is still nine. Compare the highest occupied place, then proceed from left to right. The number of written characters alone is not the test.

“All zeros after a decimal change the amount.”
Zeros can mark empty decimal places without changing a value when they are trailing: 4.70 equals 4.7. A zero in an interior decimal place does matter: 4.07 is not 4.7.
A reliable way to read any numeral
- Start at the decimal point, or at the rightmost digit if there is no decimal point.
- Label each position outward: ones, tens, hundreds, thousands to the left; tenths, hundredths, and thousandths to the right.
- Multiply each digit by the unit represented by its position.
- Include zeros as terms equal to zero rather than deleting their columns.
- Add the place values to obtain the numeral’s total.
For 6,020.3, this gives six thousands, zero hundreds, two tens, zero ones, and three tenths:
6,020.3 = (6 × 1,000) + (0 × 100) + (2 × 10) + (0 × 1) + (3 × 0.1)
This method works whether a zero is at the beginning, between nonzero digits, at the end of a whole number, or next to a decimal point. It keeps the notation tied to quantities rather than to the visual length of the written string.
