Short answer: YouTube does not say it automatically ends a livestream at 12 hours. Its 12-hour guidance concerns whether the stream is archived and whether viewers can rewind—not a fixed broadcast cutoff. If the live feed itself stopped, check the stream status in YouTube Live Control Room and your streaming setup.
What YouTube’s 12-hour guidance actually means
YouTube’s help pages describe two possible limitations for long streams. Neither says that YouTube automatically disconnects a broadcast at the 12-hour mark.
The archive may not be saved
YouTube says it can automatically archive a livestream that is shorter than 12 hours. If a stream exceeds 12 hours, “it may not be captured at all.” This is a warning about replay availability, not evidence that the live broadcast was ended. YouTube Help: Archive live streams
Viewer rewind may be limited
DVR lets viewers pause and rewind a live stream. YouTube says DVR capabilities may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. That affects playback while the stream is live; it does not establish that the encoder connection is cut at 12 hours. YouTube Help: Turn on DVR on live streams

First establish what stopped
“The stream ended” can describe three different things. Check which one happened before troubleshooting:
- The live broadcast ended: The feed is no longer live in YouTube Live Control Room. Investigate the encoder, streaming software, connection, and stream status.
- The archive is missing or incomplete: The live broadcast may have continued, but YouTube may not have captured a replay because it exceeded 12 hours.
- Rewind stopped working: The broadcast may still be live even though DVR rewind is limited or unavailable.
Check the stream’s status in Live Control Room and compare it with what viewers saw. The official YouTube pages cited here do not give a universal cause for an individual broadcast stopping after 12 hours, so the threshold alone cannot diagnose a particular stream.

If the live broadcast really stopped
- Check Live Control Room: Confirm whether YouTube shows the stream as live or ended. Distinguish an ended broadcast from a missing replay or unavailable rewind.
- Check your encoder or streaming software: Look for a stopped session, error, or interruption around the time the feed ended. The cited YouTube guidance does not identify a single encoder-side cause, so use the status and logs available in your setup.
- Check the connection and session status: Determine whether your streaming setup remained connected and whether the broadcast was still being sent to YouTube. Do not treat the archive warning as proof of a YouTube-imposed shutdown.
- Keep a local recording if the full program matters: Confirm that recording is enabled and that the file is actually being saved. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive backup because an extended stream may not be captured on the platform. YouTube Help: Archive live streams
Check music rights separately
For a music livestream, make sure you have the necessary rights for the music in the live broadcast and any resulting archive. YouTube’s livestream terms place responsibility on providers to have the rights needed for live content and archives, including music licensing rights. That obligation is important, but the terms do not establish that a rights issue caused a specific stream to stop at 12 hours. YouTube: Livestream terms and conditions
Keep a long stream and its recording distinct
A local recording is a backup of the program; it does not make YouTube keep the live broadcast running. If uninterrupted broadcasting is essential, monitor the actual live status separately from archive capture and viewer rewind. If preserving a complete copy is essential, verify the local recording independently rather than relying on YouTube to archive a stream longer than 12 hours.
