YouTube does not document a universal rule that automatically stops every livestream after 24 hours. Its 12-hour guidance concerns whether the stream is archived and whether viewers can rewind—not a stated 24-hour cutoff for the live feed. If a church broadcast actually stopped, check the Live Control Room, encoder and network records, and copyright or policy notices to find the cause.
First, identify what ended
“The stream ended” can describe three different problems. YouTube’s long-stream guidance treats them separately, and a missing replay does not prove that the live feed was shut down.
- The live feed stopped: viewers could no longer watch the service live. The archive guidance alone does not explain this.
- The archive is missing or incomplete: YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Do not rely on a complete YouTube replay for a longer broadcast. YouTube Help: Archive live streams
- Viewers cannot rewind far enough: DVR lets viewers pause and rewind during a live stream, but YouTube warns that DVR may be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. That limitation does not necessarily mean the live feed stopped. YouTube Help: Use DVR on live streams
Why a church livestream may stop
Encoder or network interruption
YouTube displays stream errors and timestamps in the Live Control Room beside the stream-health indicator. Its error guidance includes an incorrect stream format, such as using a format other than H.264 video and AAC audio. A connectivity disruption can also break a stream. Check whether the encoder stopped sending, whether the upload connection or power failed, and whether the local recording continued. YouTube Help: Live stream errors YouTube Help: Streaming tips
Copyright or policy enforcement
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content, including other copyrighted live broadcasts. If it detects a match, it may replace the live picture with a placeholder and warn the broadcaster; if the content remains, YouTube may temporarily interrupt or terminate the stream. A copyright or Community Guidelines strike can also terminate it. Check Studio for notices rather than assuming that a particular song caused the interruption. A church is responsible for having the necessary rights to the content it broadcasts, including music licensing rights. Even when a church has a licence, a rights owner may need to allowlist the channel through Content ID for the live broadcast to avoid interruption. Confirm requirements with the rights holder. A 24-hour creation limit is not a stream-duration rule
YouTube’s error guidance describes a limit on how many live streams a channel can create within a 24-hour period. That is a creation limit, not a documented rule that ends one continuous broadcast after a day. YouTube Help: Live stream errors

How to diagnose the interruption
- Open the event in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Note the stream-health indicator, every error message and its timestamp. YouTube says errors appear beside the health indicator. YouTube Help: Live stream errors
- Determine whether the live event, archive or DVR failed. Check whether viewers lost the live feed, whether the replay is missing or truncated, or whether rewind alone stopped reaching earlier footage. Compare the result with YouTube’s separate guidance for archives and DVR on streams longer than 12 hours. YouTube Help: Archive live streams YouTube Help: Use DVR on live streams
- Review encoder settings and logs. Confirm that the encoder used the correct YouTube server URL and stream key, sent a supported format, and did not stop sending content unexpectedly. YouTube’s setup guidance explains how to enter the server URL and key. YouTube Help: Set up your encoder for live streaming
- Check network, power and failover records. Look for upload disruptions, outages or a backup-encoder switch at the time of the error. YouTube recommends testing backup-encoder failover and monitoring stream quality. YouTube Help: Streaming tips
- Check YouTube Studio for copyright or Community Guidelines notices. If the service included third-party music or video, verify the relevant rights and ask the rights holder about any required Content ID allowlisting. YouTube Help: Copyright issues with live streams
- Compare with the local recording. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive backup; its encoder tips also say to verify that the local archive file is intact and continuing to grow. If the local file continues after YouTube stops, that can help distinguish an upload or platform interruption from an encoder or power failure. Reduce the risk on the next service
- Record locally as well as streaming, and check that the local file is growing during the service.
- Test the encoder, stream key, network connection and any backup-encoder failover before the broadcast.
- Monitor stream health in Live Control Room and keep a note of error timestamps.
- Confirm music and video rights for the broadcast, including whether the rights holder needs to allowlist the channel through Content ID.
- Keep a separate recording if a replay is important: YouTube warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all.
YouTube recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production-value events. That is a production recommendation, not evidence that buying an encoder will prevent a long-stream interruption or resolve its cause. YouTube Help: Set up your encoder for live streaming
