Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

If it is network dropped frames, investigate the connection to the streaming service and reduce bitrate if needed. If it is rendering or encoding lag, reduce the load on the computer instead. “Dropped frames” alone does not identify the cause, and no single setting guarantees a 24/7 stream.
Identify the type of dropped frames in OBS
Reproduce the problem while watching View → Stats in OBS. The counters point to different faults, so note which one increases before changing settings.
- Network dropped frames: OBS cannot maintain a stable connection to the remote streaming server or the connection cannot sustain the configured bitrate. Follow the network troubleshooting steps below. (OBS Project’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide.)
- Rendering lag: OBS is struggling to compose and render the scene, often because the GPU is overloaded. Reduce scene complexity or competing GPU use.
- Encoding lag: The computer cannot encode frames quickly enough with the chosen settings. Reduce encoding workload, resolution, or frame rate as needed.
Rendering and encoding guidance is covered separately in OBS Project’s Encoding Performance Troubleshooting guide. If more than one counter rises, address each type of lag; lowering bitrate alone will not resolve a GPU or encoder bottleneck.
Fix network-dropped frames
A speed-test result is not proof that the route to the actual ingest server is stable. OBS recommends diagnosing the real streaming connection and checking the entire path between the computer and the service.

1. Lower bitrate to fit stable upload capacity
In OBS, open Settings → Output and lower the video bitrate. OBS describes 75% of total upload speed as a good starting point—not a guarantee of stability. Leave headroom for other devices and normal variation, and stay within the streaming service’s limits. If lowering bitrate stops the network counter rising, the original setting may have exceeded what the route could sustain.
2. Compare ingest routes and network settings
If the service offers another ingest server, try it as a diagnostic. You can also compare with another service. A change in results may help isolate a service-specific route, but it does not necessarily fix the underlying issue.

OBS lists network optimizations and TCP pacing (Windows only) among possible troubleshooting options. Keep Bind to IP at its default unless you have a reason to change it. An IPv4-only test can help diagnose a connection issue; if it makes no difference, return to the default IPv4/IPv6 setting. These are diagnostic options, not universal fixes.
3. Check software and the physical connection
- Test with a wired Ethernet connection where practical. OBS warns that Wi-Fi may be unstable for streaming. A Cat6 cable can be appropriate if your computer has a compatible Ethernet port and you can run the cable; some computers may need a compatible adapter.
- Temporarily check whether a VPN, security software, or network-optimization tool is interfering with OBS. Some bundled tools can deprioritize streaming traffic.
- Check for outdated network drivers and inspect the modem, router, cables, network card, switches, and extenders along the route.
- Reduce competing network use, including uploads or downloads from other devices, while testing.
If the network-drop counter still rises after local checks, OBS recommends contacting your internet service provider. OBS connects to the service you select; it does not run the streaming servers. See the OBS Help Portal for that distinction.

4. Use dynamic bitrate only as a fallback
OBS’s dynamic bitrate option can lower bitrate when the connection cannot keep up, helping a stream continue through congestion at reduced quality. OBS explicitly notes that it does not fix the cause of the connection problem. Use it as a fallback, not a substitute for diagnosing an unstable route.
Fix rendering or encoding lag
If the network counter is steady but rendering or encoding lag increases, focus on the computer rather than the internet connection.

- Close applications that compete for GPU or CPU resources, especially other graphics-intensive tasks.
- Simplify OBS scenes and scene collections. Remove sources, effects, animations, or overlays that are not needed during the sermon.
- Reduce output resolution or frame rate if the system cannot keep up. OBS specifically suggests trying 30 fps if 60 fps is not working.
- Test the simplified configuration while monitoring the same Stats counters, so you can see whether the performance bottleneck improves.
ChurchLab’s church-specific guidance also suggests 1080p30 for a reliable system and 720p30 when stability matters more, with a lower-bitrate fallback ready. Treat those as practical starting suggestions, not platform rules or a diagnosis; use YouTube’s current settings guidance if YouTube is the destination.

YouTube advises choosing a quality level that is reliable for your internet connection, testing before the event with representative audio and video movement, and monitoring stream health and messages. Its current encoder guidance lists the following H.264 values. They are YouTube recommendations, not proof that a particular church connection can reliably deliver the bitrate.

| H.264 output | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |

| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
For the chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate, consult YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions rather than applying one church-stream bitrate to every setup. YouTube recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe frequency. These settings do not remove the need to test the actual upload route.
Higher resolution and frame rate can show more detail and motion, but they require more stable upload capacity and may increase computer workload. A lower bitrate or 720p30 can reduce connection pressure; lowering frame rate or output resolution can also reduce rendering and encoding work. Choose according to the OBS counter that is rising and validate the resulting picture and audio before the service.
Test before the service and monitor the live stream
- Use the same OBS scenes, sources, encoder settings, and network connection planned for the sermon.
- Run a pre-event test with representative audio and video movement; a static screen may not reveal the load of the real service.
- Watch OBS Stats to see whether network drops, rendering lag, or encoding lag appears, and make the corresponding adjustment.
- If streaming to YouTube, monitor its stream-health status and messages as well as OBS. Keep a lower-resolution or lower-bitrate configuration ready if the tested primary setting becomes unstable.
A pretest and monitoring can reveal problems, but neither guarantees uninterrupted operation over a long broadcast.
Common problems and what to try
- Network dropped frames rise even though a speed test looks fast: The ingest route may still be unstable. Try wired Ethernet, lower bitrate, another available ingest server, and checks for VPN or network-software interference.
- Rendering or encoding lag rises, but network drops do not: Reduce GPU competition, simplify scenes, or lower output resolution or frame rate. Do not treat this as a bitrate problem unless the network counter also rises.
- Dynamic bitrate keeps quality falling: It is responding to connection trouble, not repairing its cause. Check the route, router and cabling, competing traffic, and local software; contact the ISP if local troubleshooting does not resolve it.
- Problem appears only on Wi-Fi: Test over Ethernet if feasible. Wi-Fi variability can disrupt streaming even where a brief speed test looks adequate.
- OBS appears healthy but YouTube reports stream-health messages: Review YouTube’s messages and verify the selected codec, bitrate, CBR, and keyframe settings against its current encoder guidance. Test again before the event.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is to keep a prerecorded sermon or playlist live on YouTube without leaving a computer running, StreamNeo is an alternative to an OBS computer setup. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud; it does not stream from a camera.
