The British royal family’s Christmas Eve gift exchange follows a German tradition associated with Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. Royal Collection Trust dates the custom to Victoria’s reign, but its account does not name an exact first year or describe the practice as a formal royal rule.
How the Christmas Eve tradition began
Royal Collection Trust explains that Victoria and Albert exchanged presents on Christmas Eve in keeping with German tradition. The custom became part of royal Christmas celebrations during Victoria’s reign; the available historical account establishes that period, not a precise date when the practice first began. Royal Collection Trust’s account of royal Christmas includes examples of gifts and journal entries.
The tradition is documented in the Victorian household by the mid-19th century. A Royal Collection record describes Christmas Eve presents in 1857, including photographs presented to the Queen. Later, King George V received a Fabergé elephant on Christmas Eve in 1929. These examples show the custom continued across generations, but they do not establish that every royal family member took part in every year.
What happens during the exchange?
The Royal Family’s Christmas guide describes presents laid out on trestle tables and exchanged at teatime on Christmas Eve. A report from 2022 said the tables were covered with white linen. What kinds of presents did the royals exchange?
Historical gifts were not limited to one kind. Victoria and Albert exchanged presents connected with places they had visited, their interests in art and jewellery design, and their children. Is the gift exchange connected to the royal Christmas tree?
Both the Christmas Eve exchange and the Christmas tree have German connections, but the sources do not say that the tree caused the presents to be opened on 24 December. Queen Charlotte had introduced a Christmas tree to the royal household earlier, and Prince Albert later helped make Christmas trees fashionable in Britain. The cited accounts do not give a separate explanation based on convenience, religious observance or the family’s schedule. They also do not establish a rule forbidding presents on Christmas Day; they describe a longstanding custom of exchanging gifts on Christmas Eve.
