Sonic uses the word first, in the forest confrontation in Sonic Adventure 2, and Shadow turns it back on him to assert that Sonic is the lesser, fake hedgehog and not even good enough to be Shadow’s copy.
Who says “faker” first
The word starts with Sonic. In the scene, he confronts Shadow and says, “I found you, faker!” Shadow does not accept the label. He reverses it, so the insult lands on Sonic instead. This ordering matters: Shadow is answering an accusation, and the reply is built to win the exchange rather than to explain anything about either character.
The exchange, line by line
- Sonic: “I found you, faker!”
- Shadow: “Faker? I think you’re the fake hedgehog around here. You’re comparing yourself to me? Hah! You’re not even good enough to be my fake.”
- Sonic: “I’ll make you eat those words!”
Read together, the three lines form a challenge followed by a verbal reversal. Shadow’s line contains two jabs: it calls Sonic the fake, and it suggests Sonic is so far below Shadow that he does not even rate as a copy. The fan-maintained transcript of the scene on the Sonic Adventure 2 script page (Hero) on the Sonic Wiki reproduces the same wording, and it is the best place to check exact phrasing.
What the writer said about the line
Sonic Adventure 2 writer Shiro Maekawa, in a translated Sonic Channel creator interview republished on Sonic Notes, recalled working through the confrontation while thinking about the scene. He described the moment Sonic says “I found you, faker!” and Shadow replies “Faker? I think you’re the fake hedgehog around here,” and said that this reply felt right as Shadow’s first answer. That is useful evidence that the line was deliberately written as banter for the rivalry. Because the account is a translation, quote its wording with that caveat in mind; Maekawa’s recollection describes his writing choice, not a formal character explanation.

What the line does not establish
The scene and the interview support one reading: a rivalry taunt. They do not support several explanations that circulate among fans:
- Mistaken identity: nothing in the dialogue says Sonic was taken for Shadow.
- Shadow seeing Sonic as a copy: the line is a jab at Sonic’s standing, not a statement about how Shadow understands his own origins.
- Projection or insecurity: no source in the scene or the interview describes Shadow’s motive in psychological terms.
Treat the word as a comeback within the confrontation. It is not a standalone statement of franchise lore, and it should not be cited as a canon explanation of Shadow’s background.

Quick reference for the exact wording
If you are searching for the line or quoting it, the question is usually phrased “Why does Shadow call Sonic a faker?” The short answer is that he does not call Sonic a faker first; Sonic makes that accusation, and Shadow flips it back.
