OBS can show frame loss for three different reasons: network drops, rendering lag, or encoding lag. A video file may add decoding and scene-compositing work, but its presence alone does not prove it caused the problem. Check which OBS counter rises before changing settings: dropped frames point to the connection and bitrate; rendering or encoding lag points to the computer’s workload.
First, identify what OBS means by “skip frames”
During a short test stream, open OBS’s statistics or performance indicators and note which counter increases. Also watch whether the connection indicator changes. OBS distinguishes network drops from local rendering and encoding problems; each needs a different fix.
| What you see | What it usually indicates | Start here |
|---|---|---|
| Dropped-frame counter rises or connection indicator degrades | The connection to YouTube’s ingest server is unstable, or the configured bitrate exceeds what the connection can sustain. | Check stable upload capacity, bitrate, and the network path. OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting |
| Rendering lag rises | OBS is falling behind while compositing and rendering the scene, often because of GPU or system load. | Reduce scene and rendering workload. OBS Encoding Performance Troubleshooting |
| Encoding lag rises or “encoding overloaded” appears | The encoder or system cannot encode frames quickly enough for the chosen output. | Reduce output demands; then consider a supported hardware encoder. OBS Hardware Encoding |
| OBS counters stay clear, but viewers report buffering | Viewer playback or delivery conditions may be involved; buffering alone does not prove OBS is dropping frames. | Check the OBS counters first, then compare viewer device and network conditions. OBS Stream Buffering Troubleshooting |
OBS’s connection guide states: “Dropped frames means that your connection to remote server isn’t stable or you can’t keep up with your set bitrate.” The guide was published September 30, 2024. It is a general diagnosis, not proof of what is happening on a particular computer.
If OBS is dropping frames: check the connection and bitrate
Network-related dropped frames mean the stream cannot reliably reach the ingest server at the configured bitrate. A speed-test result is not a guarantee of stable upload capacity during a live stream, so use a conservative bitrate and test the connection under the conditions in which you plan to broadcast.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Use OBS’s bitrate setting to lower the video bitrate if the connection cannot sustain it. OBS suggests about 75% of total upload speed as a starting point; this is a rule of thumb, not a guarantee or a YouTube-specific requirement.
- If you are on Wi-Fi, test with wired Ethernet. Wi-Fi instability can interrupt a stream even when a speed test looks adequate.
- If the issue persists, try another streaming server where OBS or the service makes one available. Check whether a VPN, security software, network-prioritizing utility, or outdated network driver is interfering.
- On Windows, OBS documents network optimization/TCP pacing and dynamic bitrate adjustment as additional options. Dynamic bitrate may reduce quality and does not repair the underlying network problem, so treat it as a diagnostic measure rather than a universal fix.
Changing resolution or buying a GPU will not address a dropped-frame counter caused by network instability. Diagnose the counter first.
If rendering or encoding lags: reduce OBS’s workload
OBS uses GPU resources to composite and render scenes, and the system must also encode the finished output in real time. A high-resolution video source, complicated scene, demanding filters, or other GPU-heavy software can contribute to load. These are possibilities to test, not causes that can be confirmed without the counters and log.

Reduce rendering work
- Close other applications that are using substantial GPU resources.
- Simplify the scene and reduce demanding sources or filters that are not needed for the stream.
- Lower the output resolution or frame rate if the computer cannot keep up. OBS notes that moving from 60 fps to 30 fps reduces work when 60 fps is not stable.
- If the source is much larger than its displayed size, test a lower-resolution copy rather than asking OBS to handle unnecessary source detail.
Reduce encoding work
Lowering output demands may resolve encoding lag. A supported hardware encoder can move encoding work from the CPU to a specialized GPU component. OBS says modern hardware encoders generally have low performance impact; earlier generations may produce lower quality at the same bitrate than software x264 using its default veryfast preset. Check the OBS log and the hardware available on your system before changing encoders or considering new hardware.
If the video file seems to trigger the problem
A local file adds media decoding and scene work, but it does not automatically cause frame loss. Compare playback outside OBS with playback in the scene, and check whether the counter changes when the Media Source is visible or active. If the evidence points to the file, test one adjustment at a time.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Check the file itself. Play it outside OBS and note whether it stutters there too. If so, the issue may not be OBS’s streaming output.
- Review the Media Source. OBS Media Source supports MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM, among other common formats. Its controls include playback speed, loop, restart when active, and “Use hardware decoding when available.” See OBS Media Sources.
- Test hardware decoding. The hardware-decoding option is off by default in the documented settings and applies only to file types supported by the installed GPU decoder. Toggle it and compare the same OBS counters; it is not guaranteed to help every file or computer.
- Try a smaller source if appropriate. If the file is high resolution but displayed much smaller, test a lower-resolution copy. Keep source size and output settings aligned with what the stream actually needs.
- Change one variable at a time. Use the same scene and test conditions so you can tell whether the counter or stutter actually improved.
Troubleshooting by symptom
| Symptom | Likely path | Useful next step |
|---|---|---|
| Dropped-frame counter climbs during the stream | Network to ingest server or bitrate too high for stable capacity | Lower bitrate based on stable upload capacity, test Ethernet, inspect VPN/security/network software, and try another server if available. |
| Rendering-lag indicator climbs | GPU scene rendering or compositing workload | Reduce output resolution or frame rate, simplify the scene, and close GPU-heavy applications. |
| Encoding-lag indicator climbs | Encoder or system workload | Reduce output demands; consider a supported hardware encoder after checking the log and system. |
| Stutter occurs only when a particular file is active | Media decoding, source dimensions, or scene workload may be involved | Compare playback outside OBS, test hardware decoding, and try a lower-resolution source. This is a diagnostic inference, not a confirmed cause without logs. |
| Viewers report buffering but OBS counters stay clear | Viewer device, viewer network, or platform playback conditions | Check a specific viewer’s device and connection rather than assuming the broadcaster’s PC is dropping frames. |
What to capture if the cause is still unclear
OBS’s general guides cannot identify the cause on an individual PC or prescribe the ideal settings for an unspecified file. To narrow it down, record the OBS log, operating system, file details, output settings, which counter changes, and whether the connection indicator degrades. Include whether the same file stutters outside OBS and whether the problem coincides with its visibility or playback in the scene.
