A black screen does not automatically mean your Roku is dead. First check what is still visible: the TV’s own menu, the Roku home screen, or only a particular app’s video. That distinction points to whether to troubleshoot the TV, input and HDMI connection, Roku power, or playback app.
Identify what is black
| What you see | Where to start |
|---|---|
| The TV’s own menu is black too | Check TV power, outlet, and display; a Roku setting is unlikely to be the first issue. |
| The TV menu appears, but the Roku home screen does not | Check the selected input, Roku power, HDMI connection, and HDCP compatibility. |
| The Roku logo appears and then the picture disappears | Check power stability, HDMI/display negotiation, and restart the Roku. |
| The Roku home screen works but a video or app is black | Test another title and app, then update or reinstall the affected app. |
| Picture cuts in and out | Check for a loose cable, unstable power, an intermediary HDMI device, or a failing port. |
| Audio continues but no picture appears | On an external player, test HDMI and HDCP. On a Roku TV, check whether its menus and other inputs display. |
| A purple screen or HDCP warning appears | Check the HDMI cable and every device between the Roku and TV. |
| The Roku repeatedly restarts when the TV turns on | Check whether the player is powered by a TV USB port that loses power in standby. |
Press a button on the Roku remote to rule out a screensaver or standby screen. Roku calls the TV input the most common cause in its no-picture troubleshooting guide; that is a useful first check, not proof that every black screen has the same cause.
Try these quick, low-risk fixes first
- Wake the TV and Roku. Turn on the TV and press a button on the Roku remote. Open the TV’s own menu if possible. If the menu is not visible either, focus on the TV before changing Roku settings.
- Select the right input. With the TV remote, press Input, Source, or Video and choose the HDMI port used by the Roku. If cycling through inputs, pause about 10 seconds on each so the TV can detect a signal. Roku remotes may control TV power and volume, but do not assume yours can change inputs.
- Reseat HDMI and try another port. Unplug and firmly reconnect the HDMI cable or Streaming Stick, then test another TV HDMI port.
- Remove devices in the middle. Temporarily connect an external Roku directly to the TV, bypassing a soundbar, AV receiver, HDMI switch, splitter, or capture device.
- Use wall power. If the player is powered from the TV’s USB port, switch to the supplied Roku power adapter and a wall outlet. A flashing red light or low-power warning strengthens the case for a power problem.
- Restart the Roku and TV. Use the system restart path below if Roku menus work; otherwise unplug the Roku from power for at least 10 seconds, then reconnect it. Restarting is safer than immediately resetting the device.
After each change, check for the Roku home screen before moving on. Change one thing at a time so you can tell whether a port, cable, power source, or intermediary device caused the problem.
If an external Roku player or Streaming Stick has no picture
An external player sends video through its HDMI connection to the TV. That path may include several devices, and any one of them can interrupt the signal.

Isolate the HDMI path
- Disconnect the Roku’s HDMI connection and remove any soundbar, AV receiver, switch, splitter, or capture device from the signal path.
- Connect the Roku directly to the TV and select that TV input.
- Try a different TV HDMI port. If the Roku uses a separate HDMI cable, test a known-good cable as well.
- If possible, test the Roku on another TV. If it works there, the original TV, port, display settings, or HDMI chain becomes more likely; that result does not by itself prove the TV is defective.
Roku recommends direct-to-TV testing and trying another cable when troubleshooting no-picture and HDCP problems. Its setup guidance specifies a High Speed HDMI cable for 720p/1080p and a Premium High Speed HDMI cable for 4K/HDR; the rating is a compatibility recommendation, not a guarantee that replacing a cable will fix every fault. See Roku’s no-picture steps and Roku’s player setup guidance.
Check power and restart
Some Roku players can use a TV USB port, but that port may not provide enough power or may shut off when the TV enters standby. The result can look like a black screen, startup loop, or repeated reboot. Use the supplied USB cable where applicable, the supplied power adapter, and a wall outlet; Roku describes this behavior in its guidance on a player restarting when the TV turns on.
If Roku menus are accessible, choose Home > Settings > System > Power > System restart. Some models omit the Power submenu; use the restart option shown on your device. If menus are unavailable, unplug the Roku from power, wait at least 10 seconds, and plug it back in. A system restart does not erase settings. Roku’s restart instructions distinguish this from resetting the device.

Check display settings only after the basics
If the Roku works on another TV or the picture fails only after the logo, display negotiation may be involved. Once menus are visible, try Settings > Display type and select a different compatible setting. If no picture is available to navigate menus, test another TV first rather than guessing at settings.

If the Roku home screen works but an app is black
A working home screen is evidence that the TV can display the Roku interface. Start with the affected title or app, not a factory reset or a new player.
- Open another title in the same app, then try a different app. This shows whether the issue is limited to one program, one service, or broader playback.
- Highlight the problem app on the home screen, press the Star button, choose Check for Updates, and reopen the app.
- If the app still fails, highlight it, press Star, choose Remove app, and confirm. Restart the Roku if needed, reinstall the app from the Roku Channel Store, and sign in again.
- If multiple apps have playback trouble, run the Roku network connection test if available, reduce competing network traffic, and restart the router and Roku. If one title or service alone fails, check that provider’s own support or service-status information.
Removing an app may require signing in again and can affect app-specific settings. Roku’s playback troubleshooting recommends testing other titles, updating an app, and checking with the streaming provider. An outage should not be assumed without checking the provider’s current information.

Network trouble is more relevant when the Roku interface appears but playback fails; it does not explain a TV that is on the wrong input or a Roku home screen that never appears.
Fix a purple screen or HDCP error
HDCP is copy protection used over HDMI. A failed handshake can produce an HDCP warning or purple screen, particularly when an AV receiver, soundbar, switch, or splitter sits between Roku and TV. Not every black screen is an HDCP problem. Roku says HDCP 2.2 is required throughout the connection for 4K UHD or HDR setups.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Disconnect both ends of the HDMI cable.
- Power off and unplug the TV and any AV receiver or soundbar in the chain; unplug the Roku too.
- Reconnect the HDMI cable firmly. For diagnosis, connect Roku directly to the TV.
- Reconnect power to the TV, audio device if used, and Roku, then turn them on and test the content again.
If the warning remains, try another HDMI port and cable. Roku recommends trying a cable shorter than six feet when investigating an HDCP error. For a 4K/HDR setup, check that the TV port and every device in the chain support the required HDCP standard; use the Roku-recommended Premium High Speed HDMI cable where a separate cable is needed. Roku’s full HDCP troubleshooting guide covers these checks.

Roku TV-specific checks
A Roku TV has the Roku software built in, so there is no external player-to-TV HDMI link to isolate for its home screen. Check the TV’s own power and display first.
- Plug the TV directly into a different wall outlet, bypassing a power strip or extension cord.
- If the outlet is GFCI-protected and has tripped, press its Reset button.
- Use the TV remote to select the correct input if the black screen is on an external source, then test another input.
- Check whether the TV’s menus appear. If the menus are visible but an HDMI source is not, investigate that input and its connected device. If menus and picture are absent while sound continues, TV display hardware may need service.
- If the TV appears frozen, test its physical buttons and replace the remote’s batteries with a matching set. If the Roku remains connected to the network, the Roku mobile app may also work as a remote when the phone is on the same network.
Roku’s Roku TV power troubleshooting includes outlet checks and model-specific reset information. If the TV’s menus never display, contact the TV manufacturer before treating the issue as a streaming-player failure.

System restart
A restart reloads Roku without erasing settings. Use Home > Settings > System > Power > System restart when available, or unplug the player for at least 10 seconds if menus cannot be reached.

Software update
When the interface works, inspect Settings > System > System update. Roku devices are designed to update automatically, and this screen shows the device’s software/build details and the time of its latest update. Build information can vary by model, so there is no single version number that should be treated as universal. See Roku’s software update instructions.
Factory reset
Use a factory reset only after input, HDMI, power, restart, app, and display checks fail. It erases personalized information and returns the Roku to initial setup. Be prepared to reconnect Wi-Fi, relink the Roku account, sign in to streaming apps, reconfigure settings, and—for an antenna-equipped Roku TV—rescan broadcast channels. You may also need to recreate PIN and parental-control settings.
For an external Roku player, Roku says the physical reset button is typically held for about 10 seconds while the device is powered on, until the status LED blinks rapidly. Roku TV reset methods vary by model: some use a recessed Reset button, some a button combination, and some a physical Power button. Identify the exact TV model and follow its instructions rather than assuming one sequence applies to all sets. See Roku’s factory-reset instructions.
Use test results to decide what needs service
| Test result | What it suggests | Next move |
|---|---|---|
| Roku works directly on the TV but not through the soundbar or receiver | The intermediate device or its HDMI/HDCP compatibility is likely involved. | Check that device’s ports and settings, or keep Roku connected directly to the TV while isolating the fault. |
| Roku works on another TV | The original TV’s input, port, display compatibility, or HDMI path is more likely; this is not conclusive proof the TV is faulty. | Test another port and source device on the original TV, then contact the TV maker if its display or ports remain suspect. |
| No TV displays the Roku after known-good power, cable, and restart tests | The player, its power supply, or its HDMI connection may have failed. | Check Roku support, warranty, or return options before buying a replacement. |
| The TV menu is also missing, even though sound continues | The television’s display path may be at fault rather than the Roku. | Contact the TV manufacturer or a qualified service provider. |
| Only one app or title remains black | The app, title, or streaming provider may be responsible. | Update or reinstall the app and consult that provider’s support information. |
Do not buy a Roku when the TV’s own menus are black, the Roku works correctly on another TV, the problem is only a provider-side interruption, or wall power resolves repeated restarts. Roku’s troubleshooting hub provides routes for player, TV, warranty, and replacement support.
